newer trucks

I would take a new dmax anyday. I will probably never own new gasser 1/2 ton 3/4ton with a diesel anyday.

The way I see it older trucks were built to be used as a truck, last and were not built as luxury vehicles. Now a days trucks arent built to do what they were built to do originally. That being said I still want a new truck.

Huh?

Yeah, nothing beats pulling 10K with a carbed 454 getting 8mpg in a classic rig with whistling wing windows, all while debating if you're going to have to go to low range in the Tcase to get over that one nasty steep hill.

I hate it, everytime I have to get into my '06 3500 Mega Cab to pull 20K with a 500HP Cummins that is still getting 11-12mpg. Stupid comfy leather seats and the lady that won't shut up on the navigation..... it's the pits I tell ya'.....:haha:

I take it this guy has never rode in a duramax

ok well i dont like my chevrolet bein powered by a isuzu power plant, i have nothing against the allison trans yea there tough, but the aam 11.5 seems to have alot of problems with noise issues and replacing all the fluid in them so often. if it were me id put a 14BFF in it and call it good. well it all boils down to personal preference i think, i work at a GM dealer and part chrysler dealer for about 5 years now, even with all the new motors in the duramaxs and the cummins and all that crap i still like gettin the old guys 90's model trucks. they may not be the fastest most powerful or nicest but when it comes down to it people dont mistake a 90's model truck for a luxury suv like all the new trucks today.

Again, Huh?....

What are these problems with the 11.5"? Far as I know it's the same rear axle found underneith both the GM's and the HD Dodges. The 11.5" is one massive axle. I did have a pinion seal go out on mine, but I have a 6" lift that probably didn't help. Regardless, I've had pinion bearings and seal problems in my 14BFF under my K5 too, also likely due to the lift.

I guess I just don't get the 90's thing, I could see if you were saying 87 and earlier, because in that case I'd almost have to agree in a way. I love my '81 K30, but because I like the classic styling, and obviously the D60 up front doesn't bother me either.

Both the 90's and early 2000 era trucks share a very similar suspension/drivetrain. Oh, it may be an Izuzu motor, but regardless a stock Dmax with just some moderate programing will show a mean big block who is boss any day.:D

I would have to admit though, I have always liked the 94-00 crew cab long beds.

idk about the whole tuned dmax eatin a big block all day long haha my budy has a 454 swaped 2wd 1979 short box that will eat about every dmax in our town but thats a diffrent story. and the whole old truck thing isnt just the 90's im manly thinking about like 87 and back but the 90's are still alot tougher built, and yea i dont like the ifs crap on the 90's or newer trucks. and with the whole 11.5 axle they require alot of maintance and i have seen alot that have noise problems with very low miles on them. yea they are huge but ive seen a few with ruined gears inside from over heating and the wrong setup stock.

Whats it weigh? 4300lbs? Vs. the typical 7K+ 4wd 1 ton. Did you catch that thread with the guy that put a Dmax in his 72 K5? That thing is FAST!

Really? What is the maintenance? There isn't much talk about any issues with the 11.5 in the Dodge Diesel forums, but since you work at a dealership you might see more than the average Joe. What maintenance should I be doing on mine?

all the maintance crap ive seen on then is they are constanly changing the diff fluid in them and its synthetic oil to so its kinda pricey. and ive seen trucks come in and id take the diff cover off and clean the magnet off and like the next time its in it would be covered in metal again. so idk whats up with those, id just make sure you keep your diff fluid changed. o yea ive seen the rear axles not warrentied because of the fluid not bein changed, kinda dunb but it void the warrenty.

yea i seen that dmax blazer that thing looked sick. the car he raced was all kinds of upset when the blazer blew by him hahaa

Your comparing apples and oranges here. Obviously a diesel will pull more and get better mileage doing it what we are taking about is the fact that newer trucks are covered in plastic crap and crinkle up over anything. They are harder to work on and cost more to fix and dont last as long. Good luck getting your savings back for what you spent on that 06 3500 mega cab with a cummins in fuel cost. That had to run you at least 15-20k and thats with 100k+ miles on it. A Nice rig with a 454 will run you <5k. Itll take quite a while to make up 10k in fuel cost

p.s my 76 k5 has navigation :woot:

This thread sure took a dump, although I guess it didn't start out too strong. :)

Really? Seems like this whole site is dedicated to fixing the old trucks so that's a wash between old vs. new. As far as lasting as long that's unrealistic.... there are plenty of 150k+ mile new gassers and TONS of 250k+ mile diesels still chugging along just fine.

I think what we've learned is....

Some guys want a cheap tow rig so they justify the tractor like ride, bad mileage and overall work truck feel with the fact that they got it for cheap.

Other guys don't mind having a payment because you can hop in and go, no worries. Besides changing the oil there generally isn't any wrenching going on. They ride 10X better than the older rigs, get better mileage and can tow A LOT more. Not to mention the SAFETY factor of the newer rigs.

X2 Avery.

I love the old (pre 87) chevy trucks as much as everyone else on here does. will I ever be without one again? Probably not. Will I ever DD one unless I absolutly have to? **** NO!

Theres a reason they dont still make square body chev's anymore. most have been stated.

it's actually not apples to oranges. We are talking using either old or new as they were intended to do. The fact that a newer rig has 3 times the power, can tow twice the weight, get better mileage, and do it in serious luxury, is just a pro to a newer rig.

Actually, I paid about $30K and it had 47K miles on it.:thumb: If a guy just wants to spend $5K on a rig, then that is fine too. That is exactly what I did when I bought my service truck. I only drive it about 6-7K a year and figured I could deal with an older rig to save some bucks. When it came to my personal truck that I evening drive and weekend tow with, I wanted newer. I could afford it, so why not?

just throwing it out there, but isuzu doesn't make the dmax motor. It was a joint venture between isuzu and GM. All dmax's are built by GM in Moraine, Ohio.

Good to know. Izuzu is the one that actually designed the engine right?

My 7000 pound truck with a 468 and around 500 horse wont even touch my friends 7000 pound duramax
