noJeeps 2001 duramax Frank - new headlights

Restore is a good product that's been around for a long time.

I'm surprised your going to flip it. Seems like you like this truck.

It has endeared itself to me much better than the 2014 I had ever did, but I have a credit card that needs paying and this will help me go a long way to paying that off much much sooner than otherwise. At least that's the idea, we'll see what actually happens.

Perfectly understandable.

I need help from the ck5 brain trust:

The can of restore didn't do anything, near as I can tell. It still smokes blue once it's warmed up and consumes oil. The smoke comes out the exhaust in a steady stream, not in puffs like it would if a single cylinder had issues, which leads me to believe it has to do with the turbo, but since I'm not familiar with these motors, that's just a blind guess. Any known issues with the lb7 motor that causes these symptoms? It'll be much easier to sell (and much less embarrassing to live with) if it doesn't smoke at all. If it's not a cheap fix I'll just live with it. Could it be the type of oil? I did run seafoam in each of the last two changes just before I drained the old stuff out, so that may have dissolved/loosened some sludge that was stopping a leak before... I'm also using Mobil1 full synthetic, 15w-40, should I switch back to conventional? Think that might make a difference? I read that diesels will make blue smoke if you run too light of an oil.

What kind of oil was run in it before you bought it ? I am sure it wasn't Mobil 1, just run Rotella or something would still work well.

If I knew you were trying to flip it I would have told you not to mess with seafoam.
At this point if it's not the turbo which is a high probability, the thickness of the oil could be the culprit.
Put regular 15w40 and add some lucas oil treatment.
It should stop it if it's the problem.

Mobil one must be a "good" oil, because every engine both my dad and I have ever used it in burned it like crazy.

Go back to running Rotella and I bet it'll pretty much clear it's self up.

Mobil1 has been great in my Yukon and anything else I've owned that's been a gas motor, but I guess diesels are different enough I should use diesel specific oil. Guess I'll cut this change short...

That and I'm not sure what the previous owner ran for oil, I'm pretty sure it was "oil" since it leaked from the filter seal and he never changed it. But it didn't smoke then...

So you didn't use a diesel specific oil?
That's your problem.
It's not just the thickness but the composition is different. You need to have a diesel specific oil
I agree rotella is good but mobil delvac and Chevron delo is just as good. Just stick with one and you'll have a better experience.
Each uses different types of additives and when you change it dislodges things and creates problems

I figured 15w40 was 15w40 was 15w40. I guess there's gas 15w40 and diesel 15w40. For now I'll put a quart of Lucas oil stabiliser in there and hopefully that'll stop the burning.

Any pressure out of the oil fill cap while its running? Could pull the intake tube off the turbo and see if there is any play on the turbo as well.

Have you checked the balance rates on the injectors? I just use standard 15/40 diesel oil in mine and Colbys.

There is blowby coming out the oil fill when it's running, which I'm told was normal, and it did that before it smoked. The turbo impeller doesn't have any play in it, I checked that during the fuel filter debacle. And I don't have the tools to check balance rates, but after the seafoam treatment of the injectors, it idles much more smoothly than it did before, about as well as a diesel can idle.

Did you do seafoam in the oil or fuel?

Not sure whats going on...so many things it could be. I guess different oil is cheepish to try, but im not convinced it will help.
Mine was smoking and it stunk, made your eyes burn...it was injectors.

Yes. I did a flush oil change of cheap oil and seafoam for 500 miles and the next change was 5000 miles where I added the seafoam just before I changed it. This oil is full synthetic, but since it seems it may be the cause of my problem, as it didn't smoke until this change. The previous two changes never lost a drop of oil, but this one has gone suddenly, the only difference being the first oils were conventional diesel specific and this one being synthetic not diesel specific.

Mine stunk pretty badly and blew white smoke until I filled the fuel filter with seafoam and soaked the injectors with it for a half hour. Then after going for an aggressive drive as per instructions, the white smoke cleared up and it doesn't hardly stink at all anymore. And it revealed it still has blue oil smoke and a consumption issue.

I'm no oil expert, but I was under the impression that "Diesel specific" oils were mostly (all?) about soot control. If I'm not wrong, then not sure anything described here would be addressed by using diesel specific. FWIW, I've use Rotella 15/40 Diesel formula since new.
