noJeeps 2001 duramax Frank - new headlights

When I cleaned the tape off the backs of the fender badges, the solvent removed most of the paint in the lettering, so I took a little creative liberty to add a custom touch to the badges before I install them. Now I just need to wait for a sunny afternoon...

I love having towing mirrors on my truck. My dad's megacab had the non-towing mirrors when he bought it. The sucked for such a big truck. I actually bought him the towing ones for Christmas the first year he had it.

Finally had a break in the weather just long enough to install all the new badges. Just. Long. Enough. It started raining about 5 minutes after I got the last one on. Definitely is nice having a gold bowtie on the grill again instead of that ugly spot. I really like the fender badges in that spot, much cleaner than on the door.

I did alright, there are a few very small bubbles, but as long as you don't look too close you won't see them. If I was smart I'd have finished scraping the last of the factory gold leaf, polished the plastic then applied the new vinyl to the back of the bowtie. I'll keep that in mind for the next time I do this.

Trip report:

Loaded the Green Machine onto a flatbed and hauled it to Afton, Wyoming for their annual mud rally put on by Eric Westover ( @blazinzuk ) and Frank did awesome! Yukon on trailer came to around 8500 lbs, which isn't a huge load, but a decent one for a 3/4 ton truck, and I'll say this:

I love diesel!

I pulled Parleys summit at 55 mph, which the final grade is 3 miles at 6%, and that I only slowed to that speed because with the ac on the engine ran up to ~240° and I didn't want to overheat it. But it immediately cooled off on the other side. One thing I didn't like, but I'm assuming it's ok because I don't think the trans would do anything outside of its programming, is that at 60 mph, it shifted into 3rd gear for grade braking, which put the engine at almost 4000 rpm. Redline is indicated at 3200 rpm... I slowed it to 50 going downhill so I wasn't at 4 grand for 5 minutes.

Coming home late at night a few days later, same pass, but with the temp cool enough I was running without the a.c. I left the cruise on and pulled the pass at 65 mph at the summit! color me impressed. Got to about 220° then, and cooled right off on the other side.

All in all, I'm very happy with how this truck handled the job. It even got pretty good economy doing it. The whole trip, all 418 miles of it at mostly 65-70 mph, it averaged 12.5 mpg. That's a full 4 mpg better than my old 2014 got pulling the Green Machine on a similar trip.

I've been very busy the past few months as I got engaged, married, and moved to Montana, so the pic with the rental cargo trailer is all of our possessions and the travel trailer is my dad's. I scored the tool box from my neighbor for $20, it needs new latches as the locks in the current ones are broken, so it's not secure, but it's still handy.

Exactly one year since the last post...

Haven't done much other than drive it, reorganize the tool box, and patch the hole in the driver's seat. After a 4 hour drive in the dark last weekend, the financial manager (Lyndsay) decided Frank needed new headlights, so that is this weekend's project before we go to her parents for Christmas.
