My baby bro *20* just called me and told me he bought a 89 dodge 2wd with a cummins and a 5 speed manual trans for $1000.

He said its wreaked, 2wd, and its a dodge so theres no way in hell hes gunna fix it and drive it. I said well what are you gunna do with it?
he said Its a parts truck for the "mud duck" Thats his nic name for my crew cab project. SOOOOO my crew cab is gettin a cummins if all goes well.:bow::bow:

Now the questions. 1 I have herd there are a few years with some minor issues does 89 have any issues to be concerned about? 2 what trans would it have? I thought they was all autos from like 91 back.
And 3 can the trans be changed to a 4x4 version?

"Gutbag" as their better known, pretty much not worth rebuilding unless you like to spend lots on a inferior weak trans, regarding the rest the engine look up "KDP" or killer dowel pin, failed lift pumps causing injector pump failures. 89?? non intercooled if I remember right? Adding an intercooler to your project would be good, otherwise the engines are pretty bullet proof.

SWEET I think Demon44? adressed the KDP in his cummins swap so Ill go read through it again. Ill make sure we check out the lift pump before we do much else.

getrag trans? really? wow thats insane stock 4.3 V6's tore them up how the hell could they possibly survive a cummins. It will go to the scrap pile, Ill run a 465 before I run a getrag, even if it doesnt have OD. I would really like to have a NV4500 but that may have to wait.

I know the truck has been sitting a few years because it was wreaked, so Im hoping it has relitivly low miles but its not that likely being an 89.

What intercooler would likely fit a 79 GMC? lol

I dont believe you can even buy OE Getrag parts to rebuild one as they`ve become obsolete. My 95 had the NV4500 and In 130K had 2 rebuilds due to 3rd gear cratering and had the 5th fall off the shaft twice, Not impressed with it either. Non of my trucks were making much more then stock HP either. Theres a now fully splined shaft to permanently fix the 5th gear issue and before its installed in your rig if your doing a swap would be the time to address it.

the getrag behind the cummins isnt anything like the getrags in the half ton chevies, it is more comparable to the nv4500. that being said, they don't have the best service record behind the cummins.

for fifth gear failures check this out. lots of good info on nv4500 and the fixes.

by the way totally jealous about the cummins score.

getrag and nv4500 are really picky about what kind of oil you use in them and could be prone to over heating. fifth gear failure tends to occur due to lugging of motor causing bad harmonics, from what i have read.

ok I got the dog home today. Threw in a good optima battery, I got lights turn blinkers and hazards, and NOTHING else. No gauges no buzzers no starter. We tried to pull start it but no go. I turns over ok though, and we was getting a small amount of black smoke.

Its another hamfisted electricians truck though. There are about 10 small wires ran to the pos batt post, wires hanging down from under the dash and the fuze block is hanging under the steering collum.

:doah::doah::doah::doah::doah::doah:

I HATE HACK JOB ELECRICAL WORK!

So now I need to know what I need as far as elecrical to just make it run. Its an 89, does it have a elec fuel pump? How is a cummins killed when you shut the truck off? Is it a elec valve like on a 6.2 to shut off the fuel? I know its a 12v all mechanical so basically it should run without anything other than starter the kill or run wire whatever tht may be and perhaps an elecric lift pump.

Next did dodge use fuzable links like GM? I checked the fuzes and none where blown. I couldnt see anything that looked like a fuzable link.

I took a bunch of pics but my memory card is courupted or something because I can view the pics on the camera but the computer says there are no images on the card. Ill see what I can do about that I may have to just take phone pics.

We got it running 2 fuzable links were bad and I think the iginition switch is bad in the start position.

I bypassed it by unplugging a weather pack conection near the battery and jumping one side of it to the battery. It fired right up quick and purred like a kitten.
It runs great! we cut the muffler out and my bro tinkered with the pump and boost exc. It runs real srtong and sounds awesome.

More info on the truck. It was owned by an old man on a small farm 2 miles from town. His grand daughter told me it was only used by him and it never went on long trips, and never hauled a lot of weight. At the most it hauled a bed full of hay, and coal a few times. When the old man couldnt drive anymore it went to my brothers friend who drove it to school a little bit before it got wrecked. My brother says his friend was embarrased to drive it and didnt drive it much. It was bought new in 89 and drove until 2000 it sat unused until 2006 when my brothers friend wrecked it, and has sat since then.

So we are assuming the 72778 is the actual milage. The numbers on the odo are straight rather than off a bit like usually happens when they turn over. Also the pedals are not worn very much as you would see in a well used truck. This really doesnt matter much its just my thoughts. I would like ot think its low miles but even if its really 172,778 that isnt a lot for a cummins.

At any rate it runs GREAT pulls hard and strong and I am STOKED!

Nice find  even if it is 172k mileage I wouldn't sweat it, I up to 260k with my 24v Cummins and it still runs as good or better then ever. I even manage 20-22mpg (unloaded) on the high way and that's in a 7300 lb 4x4 with 33" tires! :D

And the stable of vehicles continues to grow. Me thinks you are trying to rival Mountainexplorer for the most vehicles.

LMAO its not a compition, or at least I keep trying to tell myself that.

On the positive side once the mud duck is ready for its new heart the rest of the dog will go bubye in a hurry. And I did get rid of the gold c30 a month ago. And traded the 97 off.

What really gets my goose though is Allan has too many D60 fronts and needs to share! :haha:

Ummm its not that bad yet I dont think this is unusual is it I mean some of them dont run and some are parts vehicles but all of them have titles now. Well I guess the jeep doesnt have a title. Oh I got rid of the 91 cherokee too!

Cut the muffler out and threw on an old stack I had laying around. Nothing purdy just did it so we can see the smoke to know if its getting too much soot while we tune it. as you can see I didnt do too much to make it look nice, because we just dont care about the dodge. Used cutting tourch to hack a hole through the bed floor and the 10 foot tall stack down to cab level. Hell I didnt even clean the paint off to weld. Hammered the 4" elbow down around the existing 3" and I havent even welded it together, more of a smashed fit :haha:I even blew a few small holes into the stack during welding. :haha:

The plan is to bomb the cummins as much as we can for little to no money while its in the dodge. Once the crew cab is ready for the swap we will pull the cummins out address the KDP then swap it into the crew cab.
Gunna buy a boost and EGT gauge to aid in tuning as well.
