For a while now I've had a squeaking noise in 4wd. It's not always there, but it usually is. The noise hasn't always been there, maybe just the past year of the 4 years it's been in the truck.

I was able to narrow it down to the front output. My NP205 is twin stick'd. If the front output shifter is pushed hard into the engaged position, the noise goes away. It will come back when the drivetrain gets any slack. As long as it's under load, the squeaking stays away.

The only thing I didn't test was if the noise happens in both low and high. Only checked it in low. My gut says it doesn't happen in high, but I'm just going off a feeling.

So there's something going on with shifting the front output. It's there something I need to adjust?

I have cable shifters and adjustable detents. Could it be that I need to tighten up the front shift rail detent?

sounds like your out of adjustment ,but I dont know how to adjust the twin stick.......yet

I'm in to find out. I got nothing based on what you're describing.
I've got a pinion seal that only squeaks in reverse. Took me forever to find that one.
Barely loose and I mean barely loose pinion bearings is my suspected cause.

Pinion seal was my guess too

i got i think a carrier bearing squeak on my 3500-hd only after long highway runs .

you got me stumped on the 205 noise .

It’s a true high pitched squeak? If so, what about the ujoint (s) or the dust shield on the yoke?

A bad joint in the front double cardan in my wife’s Jeep made a squeak / chirp like a bird that wouldn’t shut up. No discernible slop but it was dusty dry inside.

Sounds like a squeaky hinge. It's not constant, but a regular tempo dependent on ground speed.

I’m wondering if when you force the shifter, it’s loading the bearing, taking out the squeak. Thusly, when the thrust is taken off the face of the gearset, it’s actually moving the gearset forward/back

You got me curious, so I just checked and the rear bearing is not creeping out. For whatever that is worth.

FWIW, in this video you can hear the squeaking noise.

Put it on jack stands and run it in 4wd, then hop under and listen with a screwdriver.

Doesn’t sound like a bearing noise, sounds like hollow metal rubbing solid metal, reminds me of a driveshaft grinding against something….everytime I have a noise that I think is serious it ends up being something stupid, when I think it’s simple it ends up being huge :dunno:

I will take stupid in this case. :)

As soon as I get the engine situation in the C10 handled, I can start doing some more checking on this noise.
