In process of rebuilding my NP205. I was thinking about painting it the original color. Or maybe black.
What's the correct paint color for a NP205? I have read that Chrysler Red or red primer is close.

Anyone know for sure?

I have remaned a few 205's and when I clean up low mile units in the parts washer I find factory stamped on #s for the assembly line and there is no paint on them at all.

so pic a color and squirt it if you want paint .

I have done gloss black / chevy orange / and for my big money 1 with extra goodys I did this . http://coloradok5.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2526548&postcount=29

The pallet you have if you're not colorblind... Or can read English!

Even I can pick a color.... If anybody gives you a hard time tell them I told you to do it, then you'll really take a beating!!!

Well from my research. It looks like the early 205s were red. Because Chrysler owned new process and they painted them red. As they did with some of their engines in that time frame.

Then it seems that they where painted black or gray in the mid 70's and then not painted at all in the late 70's to the 80's.

Now the problem comes in. I can't find in Chevy literature anywhere that specs the red color. Just Chrysler/Dodge 205's. The early Chevy/gm stuff says or shows a black or gray. But yet mine is red. But mine currently is a craigslist find ( hence why it's getting a rebuild) So I am really unsure what yr it's from. I do tend to think its an early one from the early 70's. (Since it's red)

The next problem is that while I like doing some things like the factory does (very much like martin) My truck isn't even close to sort of factory restoration. I currently have parts from, 78,79,76,81,03,84,85,91, and the list goes on. So who even really cares right:confused:. But since its titled as a 79 I should go with the 79 color right? So either clear or black. But since I have the earlier case, maybe red?:dunno:

Anyone have a website I can check numbers?

Yep that's the plan. The bearing/seals are ordered and I found a local guy that can get me any gears if anything is bad inside. I might or might not have a few goodies ordered:whistle:
Hopefully everything is in by Friday so I can start over the weekend. But one tracking number says monday:doah:

Thanks for the link if I get stumped

there easy I say .

just take your time and lay it out .

only reason I have ever needed to swap a gear was someone ground the syncro teeth off from riding the shifter lever over years of use .

most common I swap out is shift fork for pad wear and the slide ring the fork moves .

other wise clean here out good and build it up and seal it up . I use that SUPER tacky red tac-n-seal on my gaskets when I install them .

and don't forget to pop out the vent pipe on rear yoke housing and tap it for 1/8 pipe thread . the hole is correct for this already . then clean it out and reassemble. get a nice brass 3/8 hose nipple fitting .

the heavy duty snap-rings can be a bear . I have the snap-on plyers for them it helps but still stiff.

and the speedo drive is a kinda odd socket size . and needs to come out first and go in last . this is for the 1 bolt behind it . and get a thin wall socket as its kind of slight recess were it sits .

LONG roll pin punch for the shift fork holes to get the roll pins off the shift rails/forks .

magnet on a stick for 1/4 or so size hole for the detent balls for the shift rails .

the ideler shaft is a kind of wedge/press fit . don't be afraid to hit it with a good size hammer that's a dead blow or soft face . or block of wood between it and reg hammer . threads go back in to case to remove it from back side .

As mentioned, it seems the 69-76 were red for sure…..like a primer red. The reason I go as late as 76 was the fact I bought an unmolested 76 K10 to pirate all the SM465 goodies to convert my K10 to a manual trans back in 1999 and it was factory red. I also just dismantled a 75 K10 for my buddy an its 205 was primer red. It seems the later 205’s I’ve pulled were black or just bare...hard to tell.

I prefer the primer red as it looks clean and easy to spot leaks. This time I actually sprayed clear coat over the primer keep it from oil staining as it seems no matter what you do you cannot keep a 205 from leaking at least some place. Mine has an impossible to stop seep at the speedo cable even with a new collar. Its not enough to drop any oil on the ground but it makes the side of the 205 juicy. Drives me nuts….I hate leaks! The nice thing about having everything painted and clean is it is so easy to keep it that way. Its been 2 years and about 10,000 miles since I redid my NV4500 with a round 205 and even after a few desert trips it still looks as clean as it does in the picture below....well, after a carwash when returning from a trip.

The stupid Geno's Garage NV4500 PTO plate trans coolers would never stop leaking so I yanked them off before this past desert trip. Overpriced garbage :dunno:

Other 205’s I’ve built I used farm store Case tractor red. It’s a bit bright but this oil based tractor paint seals it up nicely. This one didn’t leak anywhere but I still like the primer red with clear better
