nv4500 fifth gear nut(Paging Rene)

I'd start by removing 5th gear and the nut, and snap a few good pics of the shaft. Re-read this thread from the start, and check out the pic's of Broncobuster's NV4500. You'll see a pic of the rear of the shaft without 5th gear on it. There are lines on the shaft, that sort of look like shadows. In a way they are, they are rub marks from the splines on the 5th gear that have "fretted" on the shaft. If the fretting is bad, you may need to replace the mainshaft. If the fretting isn't too bad you might just want to replace 5th gear and add an aftermarket 5th gear nut. There are several versions.

By removing the nut and 5th gear you can deduce whether or not this is the source of the noise. Loose nut, or 5th gear itself not being really snug on the splines will be your clues.
