NV4500 Swap

just checked it wasn't 84cucv .

but there was a member with build thread and did trip across country or western states within last year . he even got it stuck in river and had a emergency help post here on ck5 .

I posted in after he got it out of the water and said check all the fluids even tranny / tcase . he said we good I got 4500 in it ..

if I recall its 6.2 or 6.5 with 4500 behind it .

Yeah, my NV4500 was behind a 6.2. I only had one issue, and that was starter nose interference. I ended up buffing that area inside the bell until the starter fit decently. Other than that, might as well be a small block as far as the bell is concerned.

Very good to know. I am going to pick up that used NV4500 on Sunday.

Do you know what clutch you used?

Thats me :doah:

I have an sm465. I posted in the the other thread asking about the nv4500 vs. the sm465 with the ranger.

I put a ranger in last fall. I highly recommend going the nv4500 route with the shifter chevy305 runs.

Start there and work your way forward.

I have heard hydroboost pedals are different from gas pedals when it comes to brakes.

I must have got lucky on my swap, because I didn't know that until recently.

I'm also going to rock the boat and say go mechanical linkage. You want to talk to chevy305 about that. Sometimes he's on a boat and won't respond for a while.

I used a 12 1/4" Hays puller clutch. Any regular 12" clutch would be fine, I went with the Hays because I wanted the better low rpm clamping force. I would recommend a diaphragm clutch because they are smoother and have a much lighter pedal feel than the three finger Borg & Beck style.

We recently did mechanical linkage on Max02's '77 Ratbag pick-up. I've never been a fan, but on this swap I spent about an hour re-working the pivot areas. Having driven the truck the clutch feel is very good, the action is smooth and I'd call it a viable alternative if you can't find hydro pedals.

If you do go that route spend the time to examine each pivot point and re-work as needed before final install. The holes tend to get all wollered out over the decades. Some time with a welder, dremel, drill etc can get them back up to snuff in short order...

I am pretty sure I found some hydro pedals in Reno as well. Anything I need to look for with the pedals?

The guy selling the pedals also has clutch, bellhousing, and parts for sm465. I can't use any of that can I?

Just read through campfire's nv4500 swap questions thread.

Can I use a sm465 bellhousing and clutch parts with my 6.2L -> NV4500 pair?

Well, you want the entire pedal hanger assembly, clutch master, line and clutch slave for sure. There are pivot bushings at the top...plastic IIRC. Not sure if those are available anywhere. I would go with the AA bell, rather than have to modify a 465 bell...but that's my preference. If you choose the 465 bell, check it for cracks.

I was told I should plan on replacing master and slave cylinders with new as they are not overly pricey and a good idea on hydros? I can afford the AA, but always want to cheap out (in my nature NOT to spend money). Probably just rock the AA bellhousing and all the nice new parts it comes with.

Yeah, those bushings are still available. They are available at GM dealers as well as the bushings are still used on the brake pedal pivot on certain GM vehicles still today.

That would be wise to replace the master, slave and hose with fresh stuff. You would also be wise to just use the AA bell as you can use off the shelf 85-91 square body specific hydraulics. If you go with the 92-94 GMT400 bell with the external slave on the passenger’s side you end up running a bastard hydro hose. The square body trucks with hydro clutches have threaded connections at the slave and m/c whereas the 92-94 GMT400 used a roll pin to hold the line into the slave and master. That said, in order to run a GMT400 external slave bell you would need to also use the GMT400 master which does not fit well on the fire wall and the rod length is not the same or create your own hose that would be threaded at the m/c and roll pin at the slave. In the end it turns out to be a jackassary that never really works right either way. The AA bell is totally worth the money to do it right. Modifying a SM465 bell to work with a NV4500 is downright scary where long term durability looks pretty questionable….at least on the pictures of the molested 465 bells I’ve seen.

BTW, I would recommend bleeding the m/c, hose and slave off the vehicle and before you even bolt it on the truck. Much easier that way. There is a youtube video floating around with great instructions. I did both of my NV4500’s that way with no issue :waytogo:

Thanks for the further info Larry...

This was all 8 years ago for me and I've forgotten a ton I'm sure.

Thanks for the info Larry and everyone else!!!

Hopefully tomorrow I will have pics of my new to me NV4500 and hydro pedals.

If I use the AA bell housing, the master -> hose -> slave is all off the shelf? That would definitely make it worth it!

I am working on getting a used 6.2L flywheel. My pops says I should have it turned and that would not cost much. Good idea?

Onto the clutch. Do I use a clutch and pressure plate from a 6.5L NV4500 or a 6.2L Sm465? Something I could pick up slightly used or should I go new on these?

The AA bell is cast and machined for a Land Cruiser slave, but AA sells an adaptor piece that bolts to the bell and accepts the GM slave. I wanna say it was $40 or so. Then it's all correct year GM stuff as far as slave, master, line etc.

Flywheel plan is fine, a re-surface is exactly all you need there as long as there is enough material left on it. As for the clutch and PP...go new. Check into Luk Pro Gold. I say new, because it's a time consuming job to have to re-do if the "used deal" you find doesn't work out.

The reason I am asking about used clutch is myhighchevy4x4 on here has a '97 6.5L flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate for $100 plus ride.

I've used used clutches with no problems.

I would also just try modifying the SM465 bellhousing, but that's just me. I don't understand spending money just to spend money.

Found the adapter!

slightly cheaper at Summit.
