NV4500 Swap

When re-sealing my NP241. Do I just use RTV or are the gaskets? Will Napa carry the seal/bushing for the output housing?

Pedals are no fun! I have everything unbolted and I can not get them out. There are two studs that are up front that need to move. BFH?

Here is a pic:

It depends on how much you are willing to spend, but it would be a good time to do a SYE on that NP241 while you were resealing it.

steering column has to come completely out. Pedals are sandwiched between column and support bracket. Good time to swap one in with out shifter if your picky like that. Pedals are tight coming out too. have to unbolt brake booster (lower 4 bolts)

I would like too, but definitely not in the budget right now.

Easy to get steering column out?

I should probably start looking for another steering column. I would like to change it to the correct one. Is there a year range that will fit?

Anything that has the same switches on the column.

It is really easy to remove the automatic shifter handle.

Pull the auto shifter off. That way you'll have a column that will plug right back in. I don't notice the missing shifter at all.

The pedals take a little wrestling once you get the column out.

These pedals are kicking my ass. I got the steering column dropped to the seat easily enough, but no go on getting the old pedals to budge. I have the two bolts/studs on the front of the pedal bracket.

On the pedals in the truck, there are two lower studs that go from cab to engine compartment and two studs on top that go from engine compartment to the cab.

The new pedals have all four firewall studs that go from cab to engine compartment. So the top 2 studs will need to come out.

Am I missing something? Does the column need to come all the way out, or just drop down out of the way.

The pedals are a total pain in the ass to swap I’ll tell you that. Pretty much have to gut the driver’s side of the dash to wrestle them out. Not only did I have to wrestle the pedals out of my truck, I had to wrestle out the hydro pedals from the donor truck at the junk yard in December while freezing my skinny ass off. You’ll prolly need a box of band-aids when you are done too. Lots of sharpies under the dash to let the blood out of your fingers and arms.

Here is the thread from when I did the 4500 swap into the K10 along with the hydro pedal box swap. There are some blurbs on the pedals on page 3

I concur. But I will add that I didn't wind up tearing the dash apart like Larry did. That part must be optional. :dunno:

Ya, I went crazy when I did mine. Did all kinds of stuff at once since it was in bits anyway. Hydroboost swap, a bunch of rewiring, new stereo, new cluster, Rhinolined interior, blah, blah blah :haha:

Sounds like Greg's "Might As Well™" Build. :haha:

Turned out nicely, though. :waytogo:

I took my column all the way out. I also had to beat under the dash a bit with a hammer because some stuff was in the way.

Did you (or anyone else in this boat) find that your speedometer cable was coming through the hole designed for the clutch-pedal rod?

Both of my potential swaps are set up this way. I found it curious that the hole was re-purposed thusly.

How do I remove the auto trans linkage on the steering column (or do I need to remove it?)? It seems to big to fit through firewall.

There is a big plate you unbolt from the inside, like 4 bolts. Then the whole works can be removed as long as the steering shaft has been removed first. It'll leave an irregular shaped hole about 6" square (ish)
