NV4500 Swap

Got it together and started up,then the issues started.

The only gear it will move in is neutral. Yupp, she goes forward in neutral. Gears 1-4 & reverse act like they are in neutral until the clutch is almost all the way out, then it feels like it is going to stall with no movement. The guy I purchased the transmission from pulled the top cover and seemed like he was not sure how to correctly get it back on. I also removed the top and put it back how I found it.

Any ideas?

I agree with Kenny. Pull the top cover again. With the cover off make sure each collar on the mainshaft is neutral, then make sure the shifter is in neutral. When you drop the top cover on the easy one to miss is reverse...which I suspect is the issue.

So how do I get transmission into neutral? I can check by being able to spin input and output shafts independently?

The collars between each gear need to be centered. Your tranny is currently in reverse. If you turn the input you should be able to verify that. You should be able to move the collar to center with your fingers, or a large screwdriver. Once you move that one collar (far left in your pic), turning the input should result in no turning of the output.

Also, once you move the collar away from the reverse gear you need to line up that aluminum piece with the collar. The shift fork has to engage both the collar and that aluminum piece. Remember 5th and reverse are using the same shift fork. Reverse is the collar, and 5th is that aluminum piece on the rod. Get the shift fork misaligned there and it's more than likely 5th and reverse will be engaged at the same time.

Neutral will be when all of the gear selecting rings are disengaged. You will be able to check by spinning the shafts independently. Make sure that the T-case isn't in neutral while you are checking this (otherwise the output shaft will always be independent of the input shaft).

Edit: Looks like Rene beat me to it. And did a more thorough job of it, too...

I got the cover back on correctly. The tcase has a small leak with the output shaft angled down. The leak is between the tcase and the speedo tail housing. I will hopefully get that squared away tomorrow and then on to the reinstall.

My son stayed home sick from school yesterday so I got to stay home too. I got the transmission all installed.*

The good news is that the trans is in good shape and shifts nicely. I was concerned about that because I bought it sitting on a garage floor for core price.*

The bad news is hopefully not too bad, just things that need work, but that is just me being optimistic.*

The clutch makes a weird sound with the pedal out. It goes away if you push the clutch pedal in. It does this in neutral and in gear (I think). It did not do this when I first started, but started after she ran for about 10 minutes.*

My brake lights are stuck on. Pain in 5he the butt as I have to unplug the battery to turn it off. Do I have a plug backwards?*

My oil pressure gauge is pegged at full. It didn't do this either before swap.*

It was late when I got it running so I am sure their is more.

Oil pressure maybe pinched wire at bellhousing or firewall?

Brake lights...adjust the brake light switch above the pedal. I'm going to guess it just got moved and is now out of adjustment. It just slides in or out, I *think* it needs pushed in to turn the lights off, if it's the switch. You could manually depress the button and see what happens if you don't want to move it.

I've had the switches get loose, where they would back off themselves. Pretty cheesy method to retain/adjust them, but its worked for a very long time without real problems.

I got the oil pressure guage problem resolved easy enough.

The brake lights is proving to be more difficult. How do you adjust the switch? I tried to do a few different things, even replacing it with a different switch, but no luck. The brake light is always on. Help please!

Here is a video of the clutch rattle:

My speedo is also not working. Heading down the hill now with the family. Will give it a go tomorrow.

Interesting. Then you either didn't get the cable screwed back in right, or might have tugged on it at some point which dislodged it from the speedo at the cluster?

sounds the same as ours! don,t know what does that. once shifter boot was installed it was better in cab.
That is good to know. I have been told it is OK, but it makes a racket. Need to get brake lights figured out so I can go drive this thing
