NV5600 vs ZF6

I had a 03 s10 with the v6 std cab, 2wd shortbed that had the nv3500 and I clutch dropped that at 5k every chance I got.. Never put a clutch in or had any issue with it..

DItto, although mine was a ZR2 ext cab. Oh, I did blow the clutch though. Sunk it and filled the bellhouse with mud... cant say that is the transmissions fault though

I was looking for a ZR2 for a while and could never find one with a manual transmission. That combo must be rare :deal:

Yeah. Ordered it, came with 7 miles. Then proceeded to hydrolock the engine, blow the clutch and bash every body panel in over then next couple years... To be young and dumb again with a good job and more money than brains. I have to say though it took it all like a champ, I couldn't even blow up the gov-lock

Ditto lol I must have gone through 5 sets of tires on that truck and put 120k on it.. The only prob was the at compressor seized up on a muggy August day.. That's it..

I been wondering about this.. first off why would anyone use an nv4500 with its wide spacing vs one of these trans? Both are stronger and larger.. Just wondering? say for a cummins or big block application..

Another reason is that NV4500s are sometimes cheap (I found mine for $200), but I don't think the 6-speeds are anywhere near that price range yet. I can find a rebuilt 4500 for $1k on ebay, but the 6-speeds start at more than twice that. So the casual hobbiest would rather keep the dollars than invest in the high-dollar tranny. When prices get closer, that may change (though they still will be a harder fit, as mentioned before).

I haven't driven an NV5600 yet, but I'd rather have another gear or two. The 4500 is really a 4 speed for practical purposes. I'm on the lookout for a 3500 to solve that problem, the speeds seem much more useful.

For just a commuter car or something that see's street driving only, I agree, the 3500 probably would be better, but for anything else I would take the 4500 if we are comparing the two. For towing or anything off-road I would take the strength of the 4500 anytime.

I know you weren't saying anything like that, just wanted to add this since the last couple posts are starting to compare the NV3500 to the NV4500

I can only speak from my experience... because I didn't know any better. :dunno:

I blew up my 465 10 years ago and the only "upgrade" I had heard of at the time was the NV4500. If I would have know the gear spacing was exactly the same I wouldn't have bothered. I HATED that gear spacing, which is why I finally said F it and went automatic last year.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO SACRILEGE!!!!!!!!

someone quick.. find this man another manual trans!!!!!!!!!!

Ew automatic.
IKR!!!!!

so years ago... im talking before interweb years...

my truck was
1978 chevy 3/4 ton (k20)
d44/350/NP203/turbo400/14bff/3:73's

3" bl (dont hate) and 33's
rocked it up and down the highway with a b&m shiftkit.. man that thing would rip your head off!!!!!!!!!!

buddy of mine picked up a ferd f250 on 36's with a manual.. (smc465? had granny but i dont know fords)
we went wheeling and he told me to drive. there was this one spot in a trail with a funky hill climb that I always hated.. he told me up front what gear to be in and when to shift, etc... man knocked the snot out of that hill so I was sold..
i had to buy a stick but what i bought was a full blown truck for $500..

i crawled under the trusted out truck... looked at the gear tag on the front and was sold!!!! 4:56's!!!!

1978 chevy 3/4 ton (k20) camper special 8400gvrw
d44/350/SMC465/NP205/14bff/4:56's

so I did a automatic to manual swap on my cab before many were thinking about it. Although cheating as I had all the parts for the zbar already on the frame.

i have however contemplated going back to an auto as the wife cant drive it and that is 99% of our fights about the truck...

I am toying with the idea of a 8.1L and 6 speed auto... just not sure yet but time will tell as the crew cab has to come first!

sorry to wander off topic but....

I have NEVER cared about the gap between 3rd and 4th.. I never really wheeled where my wheel speed offroad needed me to get to 4th and if it did.. I was revvin the pizzers outta the motor so that gap from 3 to 4 was mooo

oh and hydro clutch now and TOTALLY LOVING IT NOW

For me with 3:08's in my '72 K5,it was the second to third gear "jump" I hated...granny low was still too low for most practical purposes,I did use it sometimes to help take off on steep hills from a stop,or crawl around a drive thru, but that was about it...
The SM465 to me,felt like it had the same gearing in second, third, and fourth,as a old three on the tree three speed had in first, second, and third..maybe a wider gap between first and second..

The truck would take off roaring with the 4 barrel open sounding so cool in second with the SM465--then by the time you found third,it would go "Da-haa-haaa-ahhhhuuuhggg"and struggle, until it reached 2500 rpms or so,was worst on steep hills--then going into 4th it felt like overdrive--at 55 mph you could feel each cylinder firing...but third could be used as passing gear up to 65-70 mph..

In the '71 K5 with 3:73's it was not so noticeable a bog,or lag when you went into third, but after 55 mph it started sounding like you forgot to take it out of third ...

More torque would have helped--the '72 K5 had the original 350 in it--when I first got it,someone had swapped a 283 intake and the smaller 2GC Rochester carb on it--I think that was the best combo,it also had a crane cam for off road/towing low rpm use in it when I got it..

After I "upgraded" to an aluminum intake and tried various carbs like a Q-jet,Holleys,Edelbrock,and a Carter AFB,I left the AFB on it,that seemed to have the best "boot"--but in reality I think the dinky 2 bbl made better low RPM torque and driveability..you could lug it down in higher gears and accelerate and no pinging,herky-jerky bucking,,like all the 4 bbls did...

If I had a healthy 454 in it,I probably wouldn't have noticed the "tall gearing" so much..

so question... what transmission do you think this guys runs at 10 minute mark... stick.. huge tires.. ive seen many videos and they hammer down... not really as much in this video though.
