I'm disassembling a stupid *(^@#$*($& propietary piece of computer equipment, and the manufacturer went wild with Torx fasteners. Thankfully they're just regular shaped ones, not those evil "security" ones... BUT. I would *swear* that some are smaller than a T-10, like a T-7 or something. Does such a thing exist?

Also frustrating is the amazing torque that was used to put these boogers in, so I'm having great difficulty getting them out (and we're talking T-20 here, not big ones) even with a 1/4" drive ratchet.

Grrrrrrr. :(

Anyway, any observations on the existence of small sizes welcome, plus any other helpful hints other than "drill the bastards out" which is my next plan.

And yeah, the tip on my cheapo driver wore out, so I'm using decent a Craftsman hand driver plus some fairly nice 1/4" drive ones (Lisle, I think).

:dunno:

Yep.

Ran into this trying to take my cell phone apart. IIRC it was a T5, and there were some like T3's and what not.

My local Ace actually had the bits, go figure. About $2/each.

If you've got a harbor freight, they've probably got some cheapies too.

Ah yeah... I have those in 1/4"hex, right, but there's no way they can apply enough torque to get these off -- I think they've been loc-tited or glued or something.

There is evidence of hot-melt glue on the wiring in places ... whether or not it 's made to be serviced, this thing is certainly *built* :|

Anyway, I'm grinding off the heads of the ones I can get out on the outside, we'll see how that goes. I'm just stripping the dang thing for its stepper motors and related hardware anyway. :dunno:

I bought the T-6 torx driver I needed for a few screws on my pocket knife at Sears.

There is a even new fancy torx size that is call "Torx Plus". It almost looks the same but the width the "points" are wider.

Torx Plus
You could fit the standard Torx in the Torx Plus fastener, but you stand a good chance of stripping the head.
There are a few insert holders at work that have these fasteners, so I have a set of Torx and Torx Plus drivers.
Sound like you just don’t have the right size Torx driver in the first place. Yes, there is sizes smaller than T10. The sizes I have at work are T20, T15, T10, T9, T8, T7, T6, TP20, TP15, TP10, TP9, TP8, TP7, and TP6. (Note, T* means standard Torx and TP* means Torx Plus.)

Yes, because there are simply not enough different bits out there! Can I get a TP* tamper proof please? lol

I was carrying a tiny torx screwdriver set last week. T5-T10. Most guys just looked at me funny. On sale right now 26.95, ha.

Maybe that's what these bastiches used to tighten the fasteners down ... seems like 30 or 40 ftlbs, grrr.

I carry the Tamper proof torx just for getting into microwaves at my store , took myself a set home too . Nothing small enough for a cell phone or knife , just T6 through T30 . Folding like a hex key set .

You probably could sell it a machine shop if the shop uses 3/8" insert boring bars and small insert drills. That's the kind of stuff where I find Torx fasteners.
BTW, does Mac have any tools for the "Torx Plus" fasteners?

Damned if I know.

Matco has sockets at least. Not certain about screwdrivers yet. I have the Torx Plus sockets on my truck. Yet to find out a solid answer to where they are used.

torx plus? gm and chrysler electronics... most people just use the wrong tool

Husky at Home Depot has a new micro torx bit interchangeable driver. I never saw one so I bought it. It has torx bits smaller than I've seen so far.
