Hey guys. I just got back from an offroad trip in PA, which is the first time the pumpkin has seen any decent trails in a while. The truck performed as I expected with the exception of the carb.

I have a holley 600 electric choke and vacuum secondaries and while it was better then the edelbrock I had in the past, it left a lot to be desired. any substantial hills left me in the throttle to keep it running, which is to be expected from a stock carb.

I was wondering if its worth it to lower the float positions a little and extend the vent tubes? I have read good things about the motorcraft 2100/2150 2bbl and was wondering if anyone has any experience with them? I would like to get rid of the gas sucking holley, but if I can get decent performance from it I would consider keeping it.

and btw, I wanna squash this before it starts...... Im not interested in injection or propane hahahah

As mentioned, Q-jet is the way to go.

It is the stock carb for basically every carb'd K series truck, Edelbrock and Holley were never used by Chevy AFAIK for the K series stuff.

You'll be hard pressed to find a carb that works better on a truck that gets wheeled :pimp:

I ran the stock Q-jet in my truck (original, my dad bought the truck new in '76) until very recently.

Even once my truck was basically a buggy, the Q-jet didn't really hold me back. I made Mickey's hot tub on Hell's Revenge in Moab (easy to search that on youtube, not my truck specifically but there are plenty of videos) with the stock Q-jet. That is more angle than most Chevy trucks will ever see.

x3
how many more do you need?

x4 with personal experience i've had my q-jet
-facing near vertical without bogging down at all
-On rocks being bounced all around without ever stalling
-Jumped with it and its never stalled
-So steep down hill i almost flipped over forwards and still the q-jet didnt miss a beat

Its the shet :waytogo:

Yep, q-jet...

I ran one for a long time before the propane swap... Never had an issue and could get angles that holleys and edelbrocks only dream about...

I run a q-jet also, but I am not as impressed with it as these guys. They make it sound like EFI. It works but when I get nose up & bounce it much it wants to die. Which seems to be all the time. Most of the trails we ride are steep & have a lot of ledges with medium to large loose rocks. Don't get me wrong it runs as well or better than any other carb. There is just no substitute for EFI.

2100 series are good carbs too. I personnally know of 2 on the trail locally & they work well.

I ran dual Holley 750's with mechanical secondaries on my blower...off road...

I bought the slosh tube kits and the off road spring kits for the floats.

Set the floats at minimal level.....

Took the float vents,,tied them together with vacuum hose and a tee....
ran the overflow hose out of the air filter to a small waste tank....

worked pretty good.......but still had trouble on steep climbs...
worked great in the mud...

so I pulled the blower, installed the factory aluminum intake that came with the crate engine.....and bolted on ...... you guessed it....a q-jet.

80° inclines....no problem...:woot:

mine is great except downhill and bouncy. otherwise no problems with inclines and such. its the orig. from 78'

Will a Q-Jet bolt up to my Edelbrock Performer intake or do I need to swap it out for something else like a stock Chevy intake?

It'll either bolt right on or an adapter would make it a direct bolt on. Adapters are readily available at any of the catalog companies.

Very intersting replys...i have an elderbrock n it tends to stall quite a bit...looks like ill b gettin an q-jet soon...

They make a Performer RPM manifold with the q-jet pattern.

JET performance does a bad ass job building q-jets

I'm assuming you're all talking about a non-comp controlled q-jet correct?
The stock q-jet on my '85 was computer controlled and it did ok in off-camber situations but it's throttle response was a little lacking.

yeah those are boat anchors , you want a good quality rebuilt non "computer controlled" Q-jet .

A good q-jet is the best Carb you can get for a truck Period.
