Last year Scott made a basic request that someone step up and take on the former Trifecta run in its entirety. The trail run would be that persons responsibility to organize and follow through with. Well guess what I’m now that guy.:doah:

My first order of business was that IMO the Trifecta name was part of the issue, the name of the trail is Golden Spike and perhaps a name change will aid in making this an all new affair. This is the last official time you will see the name Trifecta.

I will be the Trail leader this year, I have reached out to one individual to be the tail gunner and if we have the right person want to run the trail we will have a mid pack person (this person will be chosen out of the 10 selected people). My personal goal is to rotate leaders and trail gunners yearly so that we are able to keep well qualified leaders doing this run year after year while providing everyone a bit of a “break” as the years go on.

This trail does have specific requirements to run, they are as follows:

Vehicle qualifications
• 37” tires min. There may be a possibility of someone with 35” tires doing the run depending on final numbers and the experience of the person.
• Functioning lockers front and rear
• Frame (or other solidly mounted) tow hooks 1 front 1 rear min.
• Functioning winch
• Tow strap, and or tree strap and misc. shackles and recovery gear
• Spare tire OR buddy on the run with spare tire for your use. No more than two trucks per spare.
• Basic hand tools, - Crescent wrench, sockets, end wrenches, ratchets, screw drivers etc. Basically enough tools to change a tire, spark plug, axle shaft, drive shaft etc.
• Buddy that is sharing specialty items like hub nut sockets, odd ball specialty items. (This is not required but is nice to know for the group)
• Spare parts, at least one spare u joint for each different size on the vehicle, spare axle shafts (preferably assembled and ready to install), misc. fuel line, transmission cooler type line, minor electrical repair stuff, duct tape, etc. This isn’t meant to be a full and complete list just a brushing of the things that should be carried or are expected.
• Vehicle in good general condition, battery tied down, overall appearance that it is well maintained, no obvious leaks, etc.
• Hard top OR roll cage that covers all occupants.
• Seat belts for all occupants

Driver qualifications
• Overall wheeling experience
• Why do you want to run the Golden spike trail quick short paragraph?
• Proven in previous year or years to have been able to listen to spotters and or good enough that they don’t need babysat
• Team player

There will be a specific application form that will be filled out by everyone that is requesting to run Golden Spike. There is an early cutoff date for this application it is due to me by August 3rd, no exceptions. On August 4th I and a yet unnamed committee will go through the applications and remove anyone who has not completely and fully filled out the application. Pictures, writing and proof that the vehicle is complete or near complete will be needed. Ideally we will have more than 10 people that have signed up and competed the application correctly with a vehicle that meets the requirements.

All names will be drawn randomly and 10 people will be chosen along with 3 alternates. Those not chosen will be placed into their secondary choice run for the day. Hopefully this process is completed by August 17th so those going on the run will have notice. After that everyone will get a bit more detailed run down of the timing and specifics to the trail run. Keep in mind that this is a long trail and I will be leading it just that way, it isn't a race to the end but we will be keeping an upbeat pace and stopping will be kept to a minimum.

This isn't meant to come down on anyone or single anyone out, the past years of this run proved to be long and at times trying for Scott and rest of the people that he depends on to help out. It is my goal to make this a run that everyone wants to go on, while providing a bit of structure that was not there in the past to allow Scott and the support he has to feel comfortable providing this as a run for future BB events.

I’m open to suggestions and comments but please also keeping in mind that I have been working with Scott for 5+ months on this so don’t get really pissed if you get a simple no at this time, if this goes off as I envision it will and the feedback is that there is some room for lee way then we can start trying to open it up a bit. Until such time I’m going to be a bit Autocratic about this.

I will work with Scott to have the application form and necessary info on the registration site and perhaps if needed make it available sooner. When Scott opens registration you will notice that there will be a box for each day to select an alternate trail, you will do this for everyday but if you choose Golden Spike you will need to select an alternate for sure. Once you register and Scott gets the info that you selected Golden Spike you will get the application emailed to you. Fill it out and return it to ME, my email will be on that form.

Please keep in mind that this is "my baby" Scott has advised, guided and proofed all of my work but he isn't the one to bitch too, I am.:thumb:

Thanks for helping out with this run, Brandon. This way we can keep it going in a more reasonable manner.

Registration should be open here in the next couple of days. Just a few final details to work out.

Brandon is the spare tire an absolute must, or can you carry tire boots, drill w/ bits, bailing wire, plugs, OBA, and a tube to repair a tire if needed? I'm just wondering because carrying a 44" spare will be a real bitch.

Carry a 42" tire, a 37" tire, plug kit or team up with someone that has a tire to borrow.

I'm honestly trying to avoid the slash in a side wall and the 1+hr repair to stitch it together and hope it holds long enough to get off the trail. That's why I wrote it that sharing was cool, and I don't care if it matches size just that it it a quick change and gets you and your partner moving.

I will probably be carrying a 42" spare with standard 8 lug pattern and I don't mind saying that someone could use it.

I gotcha. Spare tire it is. Looks like I get to build something else now. :D

I'm trying really hard not to make people do things that cause extra headaches, but I think you can see my position that even a fast run through this trail is 8 hrs. It doesn't take much to turn that into twelve plus.

I would honestly rather see you go wheeling and use the truck than spend time fabricating a spare tire carrier that you can share a tire with someone.

The goal of the shared tire deal is to have someone like you that doesn't have an easy way to carry one team up with someone like me who does. You can run a 42 or even a 37 to get off the trail and to a trailer or have a truck bring your full size spare to the end of the trail. There will be support structure and communication from the trail to other groups.

If your not comfortable running a smaller tire as an emergency then I would say plug kits are the first line of defense but in this case I don't want that being your only line of defense so you will need a way to carry your own tire. :thumb:

What direction are you planning on running the trail?

Can the front locker be a limited slip?

Seems like the winch may be a bit overboard (IMO).

Not trying to step on your toes here, but my blazer doesn't meet your standards :frown1: and I have been through that trail both ways several times without any problems.

I just skimmed the Trifecta discussion for BB12 thread and understand the reasons for your Autocratic rules :thumb:

Trail run starts at poison spider ends at gold bar.

I encourage anyone who wants to run the trail to sign up for it. Let me,Scott and Brent make the call about small things. For instance you would probably be a good candidate for the trail based on experience.

Brent r3ddog is tail gunner in a S truck with 35" tires. I have no doubt he will be one of the guys on the run that has the fewest problems with the trail.

Don't hesitate to put your name in the hat. You never know there may not be a full run and you could catch me on a nice day and be on the trail with 33" tires.

Did I scare Ya'll off.

Seriously if you want to run the trail enter up, I'm not saying I'm taking the first ten people that sign up but if we only have 6 or so guys that meet the rules and one or two that don't I may be inclined to take them.

The other one is I'm going to turn this into sort of a bragging rights thing, I will pay Scott to make a sticker for all on the trail run that has the year and time it took to do the run from the posted start time. Hopefully in future years it will build a bit of a friendly competition to see what year did the best.

So far there are 3 signed up out of the 10 registered (not counting you and r3ddog in either tally).

You've seen mine. Will it do it? Always wanted too. But did not want to hold up a big group. Eileen will not be there. Sio I could be in.
