On Board Air compressors........

Re: Air compressors........

You can just run the whole system at 120psi, but where the outlet is for the ARB, put a regulator with a little gauge and bring it down to 85psi.

You really can go nuts with these systems, mine has tons of stuff connected to it, front and rear quick-release outlets for tools and tire filling, 2 gauges under the hood (1 for the ARB circuit, one for the main system), a gauge in the dash, the ARB, pop-off saftey valve, one way unloader valve, and a whole lot of braided stainless line and brass fitings. It uses a pressure switch so I can just flip it on and it will cycle on and off to maintain 85-120psi at all times. The pressure switch is kind of a neccessity unless you just want to turn it on and let it go until it pops your safety valve. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Re: Air compressors........

I think that the problem with 12 volt compressors is that they just can't run a crapload of air, there's not enough power there in most cases. Oasis offroad makes one that uses a big ass electric motor to run a regular old York, that one pushes a ton of air but also costs like $600.

Re: Air compressors........

re -read about the check valve on my last post, wouldnt you need one so all that pressure wouldnt go back in the comp and [darn] it up? /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Air compressors........

thanks brandon /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gifi have to go for now, have to watch a lame adam sandler movie with the wifee, talk to all tommorow /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/weld.gif /forums/images/graemlins/woot.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grind.gif /forums/images/graemlins/hack.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: Air compressors........

The compressor would probably start, most will, but it is best to use a check valve. I use one, but I think it's called an unloader valve because it also depressurizes the compressor side through a little hole in the side when the compressor shuts down.

Re: Air compressors........

The Viair compressors come with a checkvalve installed into the head, no worries /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Air compressors........

no cfm rating in the specs section

Re: Air compressors........

It's about the details... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I was just looking at the specs for both compressors and was about to post that I noticed that there is NO rating for the volume of air that either of those can provide. The piston looks pretty small, so they probably don't want you to know how dismal the performance really is. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Those are rated like those cheapie cigarette lighter powered compressors. "Ooh look! This compressor can put out 175 PSI!!" They forget to mention that they CFM rating is something like 0.1 CFM. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif You'll need a good size reserve tank and a lot of patience to use air tools with something like that. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

Re: Air compressors........

That's fairly respectable. I wonder why they don't include that in their online specs? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Air compressors........

Because you were looking at a page that was selling them... Not the manuf. page. Air ride style low rider guys only care about psi so they have no reason to put that on their site.

Re: Air compressors........

Yeah, I guess it doesn't take a whole lot of air to fill their air bags. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Re: Air compressors........

Yeah /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif Those are sick, ill just get one of those, back it up with a decent tank, mabey even connect a hi powered AIR HORN too while were at it /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Re: Air compressors........

Another issue would be your altenator...how much do these compressors pull? Remember Jake your alt is only 78 amps at max. The problem I see with these little 12 volt compressors is that they don't put out enough CFM to power any kind of air gun for long. Even with a tank it won't keep up from what I have seen. So heavy air gun use will be painstaking. My 6.5 HP honda powered portable compressor with twin 5 gallon tanks can't quite keep up with my 1/2" drive air gun when guning wheels lug nuts off.

I have always been interested in getting onboard air myself mainly because we have a trucking company and I do a LOT of wrenching and would love to be able to use air tools out of the shop. I have thought about the A/C compressor but I am NOT about to give up my A/C just for air. I have pondered the thought if it is feasable to mount dual A/C compressors. Anyone done this?

Re: Air compressors........

Dual a/c??? /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif You would be chillin like a villin with 2 a/c compressors. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif 1 = with 1 for the york, and 1 for the a/c,you would probobly kill your power alot /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifto much stuff. Im an expert at this,so feel free to ask some more questions. /forums/images/graemlins/deal.gif /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif No really, good idea, but suck down power time with that setup.Bobby im just wanting a good compressor for this and that, etc.Nothing too fancy. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gifI want to know limitations, etc, and what is a setup where i could run lots of misc things. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gifjake =gellin like a fellon /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: Air compressors........

You wouldn't run both at the same time silly, duh. You would use the A/C driving around and the compressor pump would just freewheel on the clutch. visa versa..when you arew using the compressor you will be out of the vehicle anyway so you wouldn't be running the A/C.

Re: Air compressors........

I know silly willy,i was just joking. I think that 2 would suck power down though /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif The york, and the a/c.But good idea. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gifim sure it could be done ,in theory it work fine/forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif
