i'm looking to try and start an axle build for my k5
goal is to get 37's or 40's on, but ive heard that the corporate 10-bolt axles i have front and rear wont be able to handle the gearing etc. that id need.

one-tons are pretty new to my but i figure id go for :
- Dana 60 front
- 14 bolt rear
question is, im seeing dana 60 and 14 bolts from difference manufacturers (i.e. ford/dodge) is there a specific manufacturer i should aim for when getting either axle?

for instance, should i try to snag a Dana 60 from a F250? or just get one GM specific from an older truck?

apologies if this is a dumb question, thanks in advance!

The issue with a Ford or Dodge axle is the transfer case output, in our trucks the output is on the passenger side where the Ford/Dodge axles (im pretty sure) pumpkin is on the driver's side. You're pretty much stuck finding a GM 60 from our trucks unless you change transfer cases. Though I could be wrong and maybe there are exceptions. Someone will come along and fact check me.

The fords are driver side drop. If you went modern gm drive line and 4 link the Ford would work

If you are sticking with leaf springs, you are going to want a 60 out of a chevy and 14 bolt out of a 3/4 ton to bolt right in without really any modifications.

Ford 60's are wrong side diff drop. You can make anything work, just depends how much you want to change.

got it thanks all. definitely going for having to change less

looks like the hunt is on for a Dana 60 out of a chevy and 14 bolt out of a 3/4 ton.

lastly - the dually axle is a whole other ballgame i should steer clear of, right?

Dually front 60's are ok to get. they have different rotors brake brackets and possibly the hubs. The knuckles in is the same dual or single rear wheel

72-93 dodge front 60s are passenger side drop and ORD makes offset bushings that make them a bolt in

14 bolt rear from a 3/4 ton will bolt right in, 14bolt from a one ton will need perches moved and shock mounts moved.

I haven't installed the ORD bushings, yet, and, I've had my 93 dodge Dana 60 bolted under the truck for better than a year. It takes a little coaxing, but, they will fit, just don't expect to drive it that way. The rear shackles that it's hanging from are on a pretty good bind. So, I'll need those bushings before driving it.

Good luck finding a 78 79 Ford d60, for an affordable price. Only came in the f350 snow fighter, and forestry light fire trucks

I'm in to say a 60f is for a dedicated wheeler or to flex on your buddies. A 10b front wheels fine on 37s.

I’ve been running a 10bolt with 37s for a couple of years now and haven’t had any problems.
