Cheap aluminum where the studs strip out and makes for a fun time cutting the spacer out.

There should be no threads in the aluminum, so are you saying the knurling on the outer studs stripped letting them spin? Are there any alternate common stud designs, say with hex heads or something?

Yeah the knurled section stripped out and would just spin.
