OPINONS PLZ!! 35spline, cage, shackles....

let me know when you get the cage. I made some trick plates for under the cab in the back. its not flat, and its a tight space. I will get some pics next time I remember. I can make you set if you need them.

i may end up having to just get new locking hubs and go easy on my **** the whole trip if i cant come up with some cheap spare shafts.....:(

Have you been to Cruces before? From all the videos I have seen and what my friends who have run it said taking it easy isn't really an option if your running the trails with be big waterfalls.

My opinion:

Cage
Harness
35spl Spicers w/driveflanges
Shackle flip

There are flanges you can take out to drive it on the street and have a dust cover to keep crap out while they aren't in. They will probably work best but are probably more $.

35spl Spicers should take quite a beating before they give up. Especially if your inner shafts are non-neckdowns.

Honestly I fear for my inner shafts (non-neckdown 35 spline Spicers) now with 42's.

I wouldn't fear to much for them. I have watched my buddy Fred (FWP) flog the dog crap out of his K5 truggy for a long time with 35 spl Spicers inner & outer & Spicer joints and only break 1 shaft. He broke the 14bff shaft at the same time if the tells you anything.

His rig weighs about 6500lbs, has 42" TSL's beadlocked, 6:1 doubler, mild TBI 350, and he FLOGS the SH*T out of it. If he can't crawl it he floors it.

He has broken 2 14bff shafts and only 1 D60 shaft. Here is a pic of his truck.

Again, that break was pretty quiet (I actually didn't even notice, bystanders told me that tire wasn't pulling anymore).

Maybe some people can make 30 spline outers survive but it didn't take much to break my 30 spline outer/hub, mine aren't the only ones that I've seen break.

My truck only weighs 4500 lbs trail loaded, but you never know about used shafts (particularly with your friend that is breaking 14 bolt shafts :eek1:)

After re-reading your post, I think you mean that I shouldn't fear too much for my (non-neckdown late model Spicer) shafts. New shafts aren't weakened by fatigue and they utilize the latest metallurgy (which has progressed a lot since most D60's have been made).

I will question them until they are replaced or broken

My detroit is really what I'm worried about, I'm currently in the works of trading it our for an ARB.

I could use those pics, if you don't mind. I also have the S&W cage in my truck its currently bolted to the floor and I havn't tied it to the frame yet.

hmm...well thanks for the info guys!! i will be going with 35 spline outters then...BUT it doesnt look like im going to make it to las cruces this time....turns out i DID break the axleshaft :doah: ...didnt find out till i pulled the lockin hub out....soooo thats a bitch....ALSO im going to need new electic fans since i melted one :doah: (that wasnt in the budget) ......i do still need pics for that cage if you can get them for me... looks like my only hope is to sell my old 38.5 radial TSL's....again, thanks for the help guys!! :D

here goes with the pics. lots of them.

this is the complete rear hoop before I welded the plates to it. I tacked it in the truck and pulled it out to finish weld it.

this is the plate I made for the underside of the cab in the back. two pics to show the shape and two pics to show it installed. it has 1/2 inch holes in it and I bolted it in with grade 8 bolts that are 1.25 inches long.

this is a piece of 1-5/8 tube bing to give you some reference on size. I am going to weld some tube from the bottom plates to fish plates on the frame. I have thought about bolting it to the frame instead. that way when I destroy this cab I can unbolt everything and throw it away instead of trying to save it for a third time.

I hope this helps some. :D
