So I just wrapped up my 1ton swap and took her out for a ride and the steering feels like nothing is there. It was like that with the old 10bolt axles but I chaulked it up to loose tie rods and rag joints and a tired old steering box. But now it has new everything. New axles, knuckle bushings , ruffstuff 1ton crossover/high steer, tie rods, king pins, rag joint, steering box. Basically everything from the rag joint down is new. I welded in steering box braces. I did a quick eye to tire alignment. I have done some research and some people say the power steering pump is over boosted. Some people say to adjust the lash in the steering box. Any advice would help. Thank you in advance.

Caster can also create a very light steering feel.

I wouldn't adjust lash on a new box.
How much air pressure in front tires?
Pulley sizes can effect pump speed.

To be clear, when you say it feels like "nothing is there" you mean that there's little to no "weight" in the steering wheel? Almost like the steering column is unhooked and turning freely?

25 psi. At 30-35 psi the edges weren’t touching. 35x12.5 on 15x8. I towed the wheels in and out and tested in between with no change.

Yes that is exactly what I mean... thank you. I’m not a very good word smith.

I bet you don't the proper valve in your power steering pump.

Little info here:
http://www.gmtruckcentral.com/articles/2013/powersteeringmods/

The fitting orifice controls the volume/speed that the pump can use to restore operating pressure (flow piston controlled). The larger the hole the more fluid the pump is able to use to respond the power steering pumps use of pressure.

Is this a hydro boost?

As a long time power steering pump destroyer, you have to work to make enough pressure to do harm

Have you made any changes to the valving?

I am not sure. It’s the stock 84 k5 pump feeding a stock 84 c10 2wd gear box. But it was like this with the 4wd box aswell.

I didn’t make any valve changes. Literally unbolted one box and bolted the new one it after welding in the braces. Oil levels are full and air is out of the lines.

That’s some awesome info I will check to see if I have a “Saginaw style pump” when I get home. Thank you very much.

does the truck wander? I curious what the caster is. if you turn and let go of the wheel will it return to center?

If there's been no pump mods then I'd take a look at the caster. It sounds like you've made tons of changes but none recently related to the suspension. If the springs have shims or you're using custom length shackles that are setting the caster wrong or even at the far end of the acceptable range then it can effect steering feel.

Truck doesn’t wander. I will check to see if wheel return to center when I get home from work.

Springs are 4” pro Comp lift springs that came on the truck when I bought it. No shims. I think they are standard shackles up front. Rear I have a diy4x shakle flip with 4” shackles.

If I change the caster wouldn’t that change the front pinion angle?

Yes but with only 4" you probably wont create any issues.

I will take the truck to an alighnment shop and ask them what the caster is and if it’s off. I don’t know how to measure it.

I took the truck out for a ride. When I take corners the wheel doesn’t come back I have to turn it back with my hands. What does that mean?
