Overland trip: CK5 wheels the UP 2016 (trip report and pictures going up!)

Man this looks awesome guys! how easy would a 2wd c30 prerunner do on this kind of trip if you did it again next year? Cause I'm in....as long as you guys don't mind winching me up rock :D

You'd probably be fine. We ran most of this trip with hubs unlocked. I took my bone-stock K10 the whole way. I declined one rock climb because I knew I didn't have clearance to get over it without ruining my low-hanging runningboards. They ran up there without me and then turned around and headed a different direction. Probably 10 minutes downtime. I was winched up one section of wet rock by the Maiden. Not a whole lot of technical driving, this is a get-out-and-see-awesome-stuff trip. Overlanding. :saweet: :saweet:

Although noisy, we ran the last wheeling day on the choppy spare tire then ran 500 miles home fine. Hopefully somebody has videos of the rock climbing. In the meantime, here are the videos I took.

Farm truck in mud:

Maiden in mud:

I asked him not to tear it up too much because we might have to get back through it (and we did!)

Yesterday we drove on the Mohawk mine stamp sands in Lake Superior. This sand is much coarser than Silver Lake or any real beach sand. Think 1/8" rocks. To avoid the time of airing down and up we ran it all at street pressure, which makes it much harder. Some of the sand is soft and there are many stories of overheating and getting stuck.

Farm truck gets a bit of air:

He actually did get stuck coming into the sands but was able to back up and get himself out.

Iron Maiden climbing the black sand:

We had a wet Saturday but still had fun on the high road coming into Copper Harbor and the trail out to High Rock at the tip of the Kewenaw peninsula!

ouch! that looks expensive...

Yeah, I guess so: http://www.ntwonline.com/37X1250R165E-SSR-RADIAL-INTERCO-SUPER-SWAMPER-P26993.aspx

I called a few local area shops looking for something 37" for 16.5 rim and they laughed at me before I even got to the part about wanting a Swamper. The best offer I got was a Goodyear in 1.5 weeks for $810. I decided we would continue the trip without wasting time trying to get another spare.

Yeah, a pre-runner would really smooth out 50% of the trails. For the most gnarly stuff we'd just figure something out to get the whole team through.

Agreed
I don't see a big deal of throwing a strap or winch where we went....pre runner suspension would be awesome!
