Painless TBI harness...??? any one used one

You don't have to have VSS for TBI to work. I don't and my torque converter lockup is controlled by magical elves I keep under the bell housing. :)

I run a complete TBI system from Affordable Fuel Injection and it works perfect. I'd recommend looking into their harness if that's all you're after.
I told him what I had and he sent me a harness that has the TBI stuff as well as the harness that goes to my 700r4 all loomed together.

I'm looking at the howell so far but I'll look into the AFI one. I may actually have cured my random dieing thing today.... next few days of testing should tell... reading this thread http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=319837 really got me thinking..

So today I changed the spark plugs again AND my coil at the same time and it ran smooth when I drove it around and never faultered...

At this point if I cured my issue I'm going to save for a harness and spend the money I currently have set aside for it on a few other things. I really gotta finish out the exhaust (sets of car alarms idling through parking lots right now:doah:) and I want to get the data logging stuff, log some, and get a chip burnt.

I've got an SM465 :woot:

I went to painless's site and read the entire manual for their harness... it's not exactly what I thought it was  I was hoping for an exact factory style replacement like it looks like... but there are quite a few changes that im not sure I like... I'm guessing the other brands will be similar...

VSS MUST be mounted on tranny/TC... so even if I have one in the dash at the speedo I either r have to buy their $100 some dollar VSS that goes inline of the speedo cable,, OR take a bunch of the harness apart and try to figure out how to wire it to my vss :dunno:

The timing plug is mounted at the ECM so you need to pull the glovebox and unplug it there for timing purposes.... not a huge deal but not as easy.

and the wiring for some of the sensors by the looks in their diagrams are in different locations than mine. meaning More modifications to their harness.......

Is there a direct factory replacement styled one??? if there is I'm guessing it's ALOT more $$$:doah:

The Howell I got puts the timing disconnect at the firewall in what I believe is the factory location. Don't know about the VSS as mine doesn't have it, but all the sensors I do have are GM parts and go in the factory locations. The harness seemed to just kinda work, magically.

I already said it but I'll say it again. Call Affordable Fuel Injection. My timing plug is in the factory spot by the firewall and there is nothing odd about the layout of the harness, just like the factory stuff.

I looked at the AFI website... it's a tad more expensive than the painless harness. but looks decent. the reason the painless one is a little odd is because its based on a 90 K series pickup. theres a few differences between them and square bodies. I'm going to look into the howell I think because its a lot cheaper and sounds/looks similar to the AFI one.

I called and ordered a custom harness from Howell Engineering to convert my carb'd 77 to TBI. I'm still running the original TH350/205 combo ( non vss). Everything was plug and play and idiot proof as described earlier. couldn't look nicer and runs all GM replacement parts. I installed it over a weekend during the winter time in my driveway ( shear boredom ). Fired up on the first try and never looked back. all the donor sensors and TBI are oem from a 90 k5. I might freshen everything up this year and see if I can get more performance out of it.
Harness was $350. all together ive got about $800 in the whole system including new F.I. hoses, fuel pump, adapters, ect

Not to hijack, but where does the factory put the MAP sensor? It's a strange looking thing to me and I just cable tied it someplace when I did my conversion.

On the bracket that holds the ESC, on the passenger side of the intake manifold. I grabbed a bracket off a TBI truck and it mostly fit onto my pre-TBI intake, had to cut off one of the legs I think.

I made a simple bracket out of angle iron and mounted mine on the firewall just above the passenger side valve cover. The MAP sensor has a certain orientation it likes to sit in so make sure you don't just leave it hanging or zip tie it sideways or something odd like that.
