Papa’s Truck

1990 Chevy C1500
Having had one of these when brand new...double check the brake switch adjustment. mine liked to not quite turn off the brake lights and then the heat from the bulb would start to melt all the good stuff inside the tail lights.

I’ll take a look. So far so good.

Next plan is to replace the rubber brake lines if for nothing than preventative maintenance. Passenger drum is dragging so I’ll probably go through both of those with shoes and cylinders and whatever else. New pads and pin grease up front.

Gotta order the door pins and replacement rollers and get those done.

And troubleshoot the air conditioner.

I’m struggling over tires. Hot rodder in me wants something cool but the practical side says just get basic tires.

I’m tired of spending money on repairs. Think the first “splurge” is gonna be window tint and a functional radio.

Pulled the rear drums because the passenger side was sticky. I can’t confirm for certain but I think these are the original shoes as those little lock washers they put on from the factory were still on both sides and there was a ton of brake dust in these. Passenger side definitely got some type of oil contaminant in it but I can’t discern axle or wheel cylinder. Either way, new shoes and cylinders are going in and I’ll have the drums resurfaced.

That was my exact thought. My next thought is how have they survived 185k miles and still have that much material left on them.

Early rear ABS...and the front bias was pretty heavy. My buddy bought an 89 C1500 brand new and when it had over 200,000 miles a wheel cylinder started leaking ruining the rear brakes...but they still had a ton of meat left on them too.
