Y'all,

I just took out 3-4 on my 4l60e and am looking for a replacement. I have called 2 places and both quotes were from 1600-2000k for purpose built rebuild and install. Both had 2yr/24k warrantees. For this amount I can buy a prebuilt tranny and install it myself and probably have it done sooner. So, if you've bought a tranny from Raptor/Jet/others, post up and let me know how you liked it and how much it was. Right now Raptor is offering free shipping.

Thanks

Mike

run a few 700 and dont like them at all !!! seen 4l60 built to the hill and first run down 1/4 track boom. i say go big or go home i run 4l80-e in my units. just my .002 cents:cool1:

Behind a stock 5.7 they last just fine. I'm not building a drag car or have a bbc. The addition cost of installing 4l80e in my app is not worth it. There are many 96-99 Trucks/Tahoes/Subs out there with over 100k on them while being used as a tow vehicle and the tranny's working just fine.

i've had two rebuilt 700r4's, both built to handle 500hp and both chirp the tires from 1st to 2nd no problem. the biggest thing to remember is that they are not ment to be run in overdrive in town or towing. so put that bad boy in drive and hit it. all the way up to 500hp. if you need more than that go to a th350 or th400. oh and yes, run an external tranny cooler after the radiator and also an external filter system is an extremely good idea. both normally from summit racing usually run $50 & $30e. hope this helps in your decision.

i got mine from bowtie overdrive. they reccomended the level two for my basically stock truck. shifts a little harder than i wanted , but for the most part its a quality unit. i did have one problem however. after being installed in my truck for 8 months and 6kmiles.. i went on a wheelin trip in the mountains. on the way down the mountain it wouldnt shift into OD, same problem i had with original tranny before it blew up. by the time i got to flat land it fixed itself and has worked fine. i've been meaning to call them to report what happened, but havent gotten around to it.

i paid just under 1500 for the tranny, torque converter, and install kit(external filter and temp gauge)

i wouldnt go with raptor. i've heard several bad things from fellow members here.
they dont back up their product and have bad customer service.

i think there is another shop that specializes in 700/4l60 trannies that is based in AZ. it was reccomended to me from someone on here when i was shopping for a new one.

I noticed Hughes has a shop down on McDowell Rd. If I had it to do over again I would probably get a Bowtie Overdrive. I got mine from State to State on Bell and it is doing ok. Cost me $1600 installed though.

Harley,
State to State is one of the places I called a got a guesstimate 1600-2000k. He did sound like he new what hes doing. I'm probably look at the bowtie and see if it has the parts I want in it and get it ordered. I already have a cooler but might go bigger/better and the external filter couldn't hurt. Now the big question, can I get it done be next weekend.

Thanks,
Mike

Give my buddy a call, he's good and reasonable priced. He's also a bigtime ck5 builder !!!

Don't listen to all the 4L80 B.S. I had my th700R4 built by a local shop that I have done a lot of business with. The owner knows everything about them and what is available. He built my th700R4 with the latest, biggest parts and is basically equal to a stage 3 Bowtie OD unit. It's been in for about 2 years with probably 20K of towing, racing, high RPM shifting, and a lot of mud. Has never overheated or even skipped a beat. Great tranny.

I'm with you on the 700r4/4l60 thing . If I followed the general consensus , my trans should of died the week I bought the truck . I do not know who built it , but the shifts are firm , she has been daily driven and wheeled for nearly 4 years , and never had a cooler until March 2004 :D

Yep, bad stories are the only thing people remember. When someone comments that they have lost a stupid number of 700's I usually figure it's something else going on, not the design of the transmiss being the problem....

I build trannies for a living at a GMC dealership, it's all about the proper adjustment of the T.V. cable (throttle valve cable) for the unknower's. As many of us who have ran this trans with sucsess knows this cable is not a "kick down" cable this controls line pressure along with the governor pressure to hold those clutches.

I've heard stories of people popping out converter seals because they get the pressure to high messing with the TV cables. They make a huge diffrence.

Got a rebuilt 700R4/4L60 dropped in mine last year. Couldn't get the TV cable adjusted right and decided to go with a reverse manual valvebody so I could just rip that @^&% cable outta there. Problem solved.

Tough one. For a mild or stock truck a 700r4/4l60e can be a good tranny. The big problem is finding a good builder and proper adjustment of the TV.

I have been running mine for several years of ABUSE behind a potent punched 350. My local builder is very good and knew where to get the HD parts I needed as well as front pump and valve body mods. I tow my enclosed 16' V-nose trailer fully loaded (in OD), truck pull a 45,000 lb sled, and clean the rubber off my tires  every chance I get.

I made sure to install properly, adjust the TV cable as stated, and added extra filtration and cooling for protection.

All that being said, I know they aren't the strongest transmissions available and when I add the BBC, I will be swapping to a 4l80 for added insurance.

As for your original question, I have heard several good things about Bowtie overdrives and many BAD things about the RAPTOR (performance transmission center). You can also check locally and a good transmission builder will be able to tell you how many they have done and even give references. If they aren't willing to do that, then you might want to shy away.....

Good luck whichever way you go.

Out of curiosity, is this a typo or is there an actual non electronic 4L80? If there is then what years can I find one?

Yes and No.

There is no non-electric 4L80's from the factory.
You can have a 4L80 built with a manual valve body that shifts into whatever gear you want at whatever rpm you want and needs no computer control.

There are also stand-alone computers.
I was going to go with a full manual 4L80 until I found this product, which is a little nicer than relying on the shift lever (accidental over/under shifts).
