Person Is Selling A 1985 Silverado 3500 4 Door Dually With A 6.2 Diesel. It TurnsOver but No Start?

The guy wants to sell me a 1985 Silverado Dually 4door with a 6.2 diesel and both the transmission and engine has 100 miles. Yes 100 miles both . he said the engine turns over but no start. Its located not far out of town

also could be air in line from tank to filter to injector pump .

take a spray bottle fill it with diesel and have someone crank it as you squirt the hell out of the intake with the air filter lid off . if it fires then its going to tell you if its a fuel problem . if still no start then going to need further diagnoses .

but as I said the fuel filter can be a pain to seat and blead out on the fire wall . . the 82-83 spin on style was better to service and blead out I think over the later square block unit.

You dont mind telling me more details of what you said along with the fuel problem part? Just interesting

Yes, do some reading on the 6.2 engines. There isn't much that can go wrong with one, but the issues are different from what can go wrong on your EFI rig.

If he's telling the truth about the new engine, depending on what "new" means, it's probably not getting fuel. If there is air in the fuel line, it will not fire. If the engine is cold and the glow plugs do not work, it generally will not fire. If the fuel shutoff valve (on the IP) isn't getting 12 volts, no fuel will flow. There are some simple diagnostic procedures to follow in figuring out what's wrong. Look up the owners manual for that year of truck and read the sections on diesel engines.

Then come back here with specific questions. If you don't know about the GP solenoid, you're not yet ready to go rescue this broken truck.
 
You can't buy either a new engine or a new tranny for $900. This smells very fishy.

Ask lots and lots of questions about the new parts and what he did to arrive at this "new" engine and "new" tranny. Does he mean he bought a crate engine? Hired a rebuild at the local engine shop? Bought a few parts and threw it together in his garage? "New" means many things to many people. But normal folks do not dump $2000 into new parts and then sell the truck at a loss 100 miles later. Something doesn't add up, and it's your job to find it before committing your money.

The brand new engine failing to run is a huge red flag to me. Even if he put in a new crate engine, if he doesn't know how to get a new engine running he's not someone I would trust to do an engine swap. :deal:

I talked to him more about the vehicle and i asked him to send me pictures of it which he did and the vehicle looks decent plus i told him later on that i cant wait to get it soon and he said back "Great deal,hate to get rid of it but the money is well needed to help me through the holidays "

I would encourage you to go see it with a very large amount of skepticism. Even if it does turn out to be the truck of your dreams, you want to identify ALL of its issues ahead of time. Used vehicles always come with risk, and this one is certainly no exception. It being dumped for below market price is certifiably fishy.

FYI, if I were trying to dump a lemon on someone I would absolutely love to find someone who enthusiastically "can't wait to get it soon." Don't let your desire blind your eyes, sniff out all the fishy stuff before you sign a check.

I forgot to add also that there are only single tires in the back instead of doubles. He took the "side tires" off but yes i agree
 
It's a 900 dollar truck. So no biggie.

Although no documentation. I don't believe for a second it's a new engine.

Probably new gaskets or something.

But you know 900 bucks
 
It probably just has a dirty cap and rotor from sitting. Either that or the float is stuck closed in the carburetor and won't let diesel flow into the bowls. Might also be a programming issue with the TCM.
