Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

hahahaha. I should just start saving for a Dana 60 and be done with it. But jeez. That's not going to be easy, just to find, much less buy.

But I really wanna go up Hell's Gate next year.

If you throw down enough money, a D60 can appear very easily and very quickly. They're not hard to find, they pop up here in the classifieds fairly regularly for ~$1500. I think that's 3x what they should run, but that's for a guaranteed available D60 (whereas I may hafta wait months between seeing $500 ones).

Finding one is not the problem. Forming a plan and then STICKING TO IT is the problem. :deal:

:haha:

Does anyone know about this rig? I think his name was Jack. This thing walked up Hell's Gate without breaking a sweat.

That white one is Pat. @500$k5

He has done poison spider and LOTS of others!

He has a list on the side windows of trails that he has had it on.

It ran for several years in different stages.
It has been locked in both ends for 5? years.
Detroit in the rear now, drop in locker up front.
I rode with him on the "trifecta" in BB12.
Pat has a lot of experience wheeling and spotting, which helps.
He keeps it low due to daily driving it a lot, the ride, and his ankle.

We ran Kane Creek last year, and I believe that it was the first time that we had to use human power to keep it from scratching the quarter panel by the back window!

Hopping breaks stuff. Shoving the clutch in and starting over is how to do that.

@blazinzuk how much difference does running a front locker prevent wheel hop?

And does a front locker require hydro assist?
Depends on how aggressive the locker as well as tire size as Dave said.
I needed more steering power. The power lock in the front is set up real aggressive

Sure a smaller pump pulley would help

Welllllll let's just say alot. With the front end pulling the suspension won't hop as much because it's under control. Your going from 3 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive.

On an obstacle like hells gate it's a huge difference cause your flexing all the way up.

You hop when traction is is lost. All that forward drive now goes to ruining your springs ( twisting them into an s shape). Anything you can do to maintain traction reduces the likelihood of wheel hop.

Of course a front locker let's you try harder stuff too which can break traction which results in wheel hop.
