Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

Worst case I can regear my 10 bolt to match. Although going to 8 lug would probably be a PITA and more expensive than finding a 44.

Its easy to convert, if you can pull an axle shaft, you have it covered. Same process.

I prefer 44s, there is really only a very small amount of difference between the 2. The real objective is to only build rig as many times as necessary, not as many times as possible. :pimp:

Yeah, I'm really trying to avoid any backtracking.

I wouldnt waste my time with that. You can find a newer 14bff with factory disks for the same price or cheaper. And the later model 14s have a parking brake as well. So they are better then the conversion brake setups.

Edit: I found my current 14 bff out of a 03 2500. Factory disks. With useable pads and rotors and 4.10s for 80 bucks out the door.

Note:I will have to regear since I am running 4:56.

This said, i would look for a set that is what you want, or only buy an axle that is what you want. I would need a good reason to regear a 10b, like it's already locked, or a bitchin 14b that's already locked

Newer axles have a different wheel pattern for the 8 lug and larger studs

The problem I am noticing is, this stuff just shows up here very rarely. And Vegas is sort of an island out here. If it's not on the local craigslist, you are driving at least 4 hours to LA. If you are lucky.

I have been watching for awhile now. They just don't show up.

Opinions on this? Or should I wait and find a set with a Dana 44?

Tempting, but make sure that you really want that particular ratio before you wind up buying it. I'm in that boat now. My Blazer has a rear axle, and I'm now looking for a regear AND a set of 8-lug hubs simultaneously. Converting to 8-lug is easy enough, but also doing the gear swap will require more work than simply swapping in an axle that is ready to go (which is why I'm buying one).

I'll also join the chorus of folks who don't like the 1970-era brakes that you would have on that axle. Not fun to work on. Some folks switch to discs, I opted to grab a 1997 van axle that came with removable brake drums. Much, much more fun to work on and service. No funny parts. My weirdest issue was the stock van e-brake cables were too long (so I looped them around). Pretty easy, and I'll bet the local junk yards still have G30 vans lying around. There's quite a range of years that will give you that 2nd-generation 14bff.

I hope we dont have to count!

@Phil513 make sure to check those patterns before buying is all

If you're happy with the gears in that axle, go for it. Then if you don't find the other one, buy one of beags's axles from Illinois. Scrap price + $150 in shipping probably won't break your budget too badly. If it does, than buy just a set of hubs and regear your existing housing.

That's a good tip, but if he wants to go the factory disk route anything from the Early 2000s will be fine.

A 4 hour drive might be worth it to get exactly what you want.... 8 hours of drive time plus gas or 8 hours of wrenching, switching gears, hubs, brakes, etc. Miscellaneous cost of parts.... Could be a push for you....

lol, never thought of it that way. Good point.

Ehh. I have been building a truck, 1,000 miles away from where I live for three years now. I have found different ways to look at it because of this.
