Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

I'm going to take a look at that 14 bolt tomorrow after work, its a 4.10 ratio (or 4.11, he wasn't sure). Any advice on what to look for? I guess measure spring perches to make sure it's not a dually?

Overall width. And pop the cover and inspect the gears. Might even want to pull the axles and check under the drums..

Never found one i didn't need to move the perches

Yep look at gears. Drums are heavy as hell if it's a old one

Width between the Wheel Mounting Surfaces.
Spring perch location.
Shock perches may or may not be in the right place.

Aside from that, there aren't many variables left. The pinion yoke probably won't match the U-joint on your 1/2-ton driveshaft (though my later model axle yoke did).

FWIW, that axle should be a 41/10 gear combination, so 4.10:1, not 4.11:1 ratio.

If you were to buy it, would you be running the old brakes, or converting to something more modern? The old brake drums sit behind the hub, so the entire end of the axle gets disassembled while servicing the brakes. It's a pain, to say the least.

are you looking for a open diff so you can add a locker? Or are you looking for a gov-lock?

Probably open and add my own. I don't really want a Gov Lock.

The gov lock will have three cross bars, the open will have four.

Here is the crossbar I'm referring to

Thanks! There is so much freakin' stuff to learn. lol.

I might not go see this one, the dude answered me once and hasn't written back since. But I'm learning all I can so I'll be ready.

Just a heads up...theres a gen1 and gen2 14 bolt FF. Easiest way to tell if its gen 2 is if the pumpkin is ribbed all the way around. If it has smooth sections its gen1. This can also be found out if you know what year its out of. Gen 2 is a few inches narrower...i didnt know that when i bought mine and ended up with gen2. Not really a big deal...either way itll work but if you want the full length and stock shock locations youll want the gen1 14 bolt.

Thanks, did that change happen in '88 with the new body truck?

Correct 88 and up. I still have my 2nd gen under my k5. Everything is the same except axle length and shock location. Disc brake brackets dont work so theyll have to be welded in...if you went that way.

Well, I think I'll buy the axle tomorrow. I went and looked at it. Its out of a 77, 1 ton, crew cab 2WD truck with 4.10 gears. I measured spring perches, they were at 40 1/2 inches, so they'll have to be moved. Would be a good time to go to a CV driveshaft anyway. Wheel surface was at 67 1/2 inches. Gears looked good inside, everything spun freely.

Hundred and fifty bucks. I have lost more than that at the sportsbook, I'll take a shot.

Headed down rabbit hole.

Probably worth it with that brace. Ill let you know Friday about the corp 10.
