Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

Best part is a Detroit will drop right in that FF, no carrier change

Yeah, I don't understand that part, I have heard it. Is it basically a lunchbox locker then?

Yeah, its like the Igloo cooler of lunchbox lockers. The Detroit itself is bigger than most carriers of other differentials

good lord, that's awesome. A Detroit for the price of a Lock Rite. I'm stoked.

They are pretty stout, you can beat it like a red-headed step-child.
Kinda hits like a bus hit when they unload. Mine really never unlocked, I just learned to ease off the throttle in the corners.

Yeah, I'm sure some adjustment in driving style is required. But it's all good.

Just a heads up...theres a gen1 and gen2 14 bolt FF. Easiest way to tell if its gen 2 is if the pumpkin is ribbed all the way around. If it has smooth sections its gen1. This can also be found out if you know what year its out of. Gen 2 is a few inches narrower...i didnt know that when i bought mine and ended up with gen2. Not really a big deal...either way itll work but if you want the full length and stock shock locations youll want the gen1 14 bolt.

I ended up using a Gen 2 G3500 van axle. Newer design (removable brakes), and it's a little bit wider than a stock 10-bolt (instead of being narrow). So some ribbed axles are narrow, and some are wide. But all of them should require perch relocation.

If your new axle comes with 40.5" perches, that should mean it's from a 1-ton rig, rather than 3/4-ton (IIRC).

(EDIT: I see that you said it's from a 1-ton rig, so ignore that last part).

Keep in mind, this is just the price of admission. Your financial drain is just beginning. :haha: :rotfl: :pimp:

Oh yeah, I have no delusions. Good thing is, I can wheel it as-is and collect parts until I am ready.

When I did my locker comparison a couple weeks back, the first price I found for a 14bff Detroit was $424 from Summit. So shop around a bit and see what prices you can find. $500 would be overpriced, in my book.

Cool, thanks! I'll shop around.

This is nice.

Check through the classifieds here. I posted up this request, and had an offer within one day (though it took me 2 weeks to decide that I could be happy with a Detroit, as it wasn't what I originally wanted). Don't know whether you'll have similar success, but it's worth a try.

I would just like to chime in and say that I like my Detroit a lot. One of my favorite upgrades.

I'm glad you mentioned that. I don't usually have to think about things very long to be happy with a plan, but I'm still downright nervous about going with a Detroit in a snow truck (vs. a locker that doesn't tend to break free on ice). I can't think of any other mods that have bothered me this much. :doah:

yes sir :burnout:

and they're pretty easy to install when you get to that point.

Yeah, fortunately I can take my time, no rush to get it under the truck.

Is there any sort of rebuild kit or overhaul kit you guys recommend? Since it will be on jackstands, what should I go through and replace?

Are you regearing it?

Honestly, I didn't touch mine before I put it in. My axle had all the reusable metal gaskets for the axle shafts and pinion. I just swapped out the carrier with the Detroit and the pinion and rolled with it. Been working great with no leaks or any issues.

No, part of the beauty of this is I don't need to regear. Just install the detroit.

I did a visual inspection and just rolled with it, but yours will see a lot more road miles than mine. Mine never goes much further then gas or store. Then the occasional trip to work.
