Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

I do have a plan. Only thing I'm kinda waffling on is going with 15 inch 8 lug rims, and keeping my newish tires, or going to 17 inch rims and going up to 37's. I really like how @dremu 's looks.

What's holding me back is fender trimming, I really hesitate to hack into unmolested, unrusted sheetmetal.

Oh, and get the 4:10 R&P from Campy. But no rush yet, I have a ways to go before I'm ready to dive in. lol

Me too. I looked at the pinion again today. I've grown to despise it, for it constantly reminds me that I'm 400 miles away from my vice. Would be a whole lot easier to drive it out of the housing if I could at least hold the housing still. :doah:

A bearing press is what it needs. Or I might give up and make you pay for shipping the whole assembly.

Did you see that a guy on here is selling 15" 8-lug rims? I'd think you'd like to get your miles out of your new tires. You can always upgrade to 37" tires when you wear out the 35s.

Yes, the rust belt squad will show up on your doorstep and hack you up if you hack up those fenders. You're much better off leaving it intact. :deal: :wink1:

:haha:

lol, whatever works for you. I can pay for the whole assembly. We have a fedex account at work, I could send a call tag, probably wouldn't be that bad.

But don't stress out about it brotha. This is a long term project. Doesn't stop me from wheeling the poo out of the truck in the meantime.

I could always keep my wheels and tires for the future too, I do want a longbed someday.

But yeah, sawing my fenders does give me pause. Not to mention it won't fit in the apartment carport anymore. It barely clears now.

I never said that. Fact is I would have you buy ARBs...

But I've cut two trucks so far. Not a fan. Going to patch panel the K10 back next summer. Or rather new front passenger side fender

I can't believe it. You guys are talking me into saving money.

Pigs must be flying somewhere.

There are a few budget builders on here who think overpriced upgrades are generally stupid. Martin is one of them, as am I. So I'm not surprised at my advice, even if you are. :D

In my book, any upgrade should add enough capability to be worth the dollars. If a set of paid-for tires is still working well for my street truck, it's not gonna get new rubber until the old stuff isn't working well enough anymore. So unless you are needing that extra height, I think tossing a newish set of 35s sounds foolish. If you don't have enough lift to clear the tires and you've already maxed out the carport height, keeping the 35s is a no-brainer. No use creating a truck that you can't even park at home. That's my $.02. Worth what you paid for it.

This same philosophy goes for all parts of the build. I have little interest in a D60 because I don't think the added cost will bring any benefit for my usage patterns. Everyone's priorities are different, and your truck will have very different needs than mine.

Not having the axle pieced together may wind up stopping you...when you fragment that G80 carrier. ;)

Oh, man. Whyowhy do the ARB units hafta be so pricey? I'd love to have one on each axle, but those two items would outprice the value of the truck. :doah:
Yeah, 2 will break the bank. Dang they work awesome. WAAAAAAAAY better than any other option. And worth the money in my book.

This is all very true. Honestly, for what I do, the truck works well as it sits. It really does need gears though, I get a bit of clutch shudder taking off in first, and it's just way too tall geared.

And if I regear, I don't want to spend the money regearing a 10 bolt rear axle. That's what has led to all this. lol.

You're on the right track. I just don't think that jumping to 37s is going to add much to the truck. Especially if you're not increasing the lift to match.

For you. But my goal is overlanding. Trails and camping. I don't like smashing into things, and I hate mud. I wanna run snowy roads and winding forest trails. I have not yet been bitten by the rock crawling bug. I have much more interest in having a nice camping setup than in getting through Fordyce.

Thus, ARBs are not a good idea for me at this level of craziness. Maybe in a few years.

Wasn't planning on swapping my gears out yet... $$ But I'm going to be pulling my 4.10's for 4.56 at some point. I'll hit you up if you're still in the market by the time I get to it.
