Phil's '88 Big Blue Build Thread

Oh. Well, one reason that they haven't arrived yet is that they haven't left yet.

I did pull the ring gear off today, wrap it in paper, and set it in the car with the pinion. I'm planning to swing past the post office and see if I can fit the 10.5" gearset in a flat rate box. Not sure yet how that's gonna go. Will update when it happens. :)

It's really no problem brotha. This is most likely going to be a Fall/Winter project. The heat is bullshit right now.

Yeah, price VS living with it has been my struggle.
Well, the Detroit is more cost effective now, and easily resold if you don't like it.

Then you have real world experience of your own instead of relying on crazy internet dude telling you what you want.

I have found most crazy internet dudes on this website know what they are talking about.

Except the NP203 FRONT WHEEL DRIVE guy. He was nutty.

This also will be a great conversation to have Friday at the BB BBQ, after some seat time on the Red Rock

This is true, but keep in mind that folks disagree on this. Some folks love Detroits, some folks can't stand them. You probably won't have a good grasp of your own preference until you drive one for a while. I'm in the same boat. I've ridden in 4 or 5 locked trucks (all automatics :doah:), but I don't think I've gotten any driving time with one yet. So I'm also not quite sure what to expect when I get mine on the road. :dunno:

Basic trade-off, the kind you do many times every single day. Would you rather have the switch or more money in the bank?
Theres a lot more to it than that. In Philland climate, it is probably more forgiving. I grew to hate that thing in my K5 because it wouldnt unlock. No differentiation, so on ice, it would walk the rear end out on the crowned streets. No different than a spool. Spool being a large factor to how my sister flipped her jeep.

So yeah, i really like the ARB

Too lazy.

Phil i think uou can detroit tjose without needing a setup kit, which also factors to the cost

Argh. We've been over this before. I always end up dreading this thing instead of eagerly anticipating it.

It's all your fault.

Makes sense. Martin seems to think with a little practice, its not that big a deal. Maybe its worth a $453 experiment.

Yeah, remove cover & bearing caps, loosen adjuster, remove carrier. Take carrier to bench, remove bolts holding ring gear on, carrier comes apart. Remove spider gears, insert Detroit, reassemble carrier & ring gear. Then, AFTER reassembling the carrier, remove the bolt holding the Detroit together (order is important here :haha:). Reinstall carrier & bearing caps, and use adjusters to set backlash to proper spec. Pretty simple, and the gasket is the only thing that you might need to replace.

This is all moot, however, if you're also replacing the gears. You'll hafta set up the pinion end of things, too.
