Since I have the axles out, I'm going to take a break from the fun part (locker install) and do the really NOT fun part (put new brakes on).

Then back to the locker.

I actually a while back bought the proper tools for drum brake. The pliers the spring clip thing couple of other doodads.

So much easier.

Course I lent those to someone who was in desperate need, or so he said, and haven't seen them since

Yeah, I put the little quarter turn spring retainers on with my fingers. And I finally figured out the springs go on a lot easier if I clamp the crap out of them with vice grips.

I need proper tools. And as for the pumpkin, it came apart like a breeze. Probably 20 minutes max from draining to getting the spiders out.

Nice. I've seen drum brakes that actually came apart quickly (though mostly they just suck), and I've spent way too long trying to get axle shafts out. It can go either way. Glad it came apart smoothly for you. Now to get the brakes to show the same cooperation. :thinking:

For drum brake springs I grab the retainer with vice grips and use the pliers to both compress the spring and provide the quarter turn. Having the bent pliers for the shoe springs is more fun than using normal pliers, but I still found myself using vice grips for one of them last time. :dunno:
 
Actually, brakes are finished. And locker is in. Time to button it all back up, clean up, and fill the pumpkin and test drive.

I put thread locker on the cross pin bolt. Is it ok to go ahead and fill the pumpkin with gear oil?

What's wrong with using red???
Don't you think that would be a wonderful smell , heating the carrier, and the film of gear oil, to release the loctite?:haha:
 
Well, color me happy. Just did a test drive, so far it works great. Ratchets around corners, you can hear it but it's not loud at all. Then as soon as I get on it, it locks and the inside tire gets a little smaller. lol.

I need something to eat. I'm starving.
