picked up a 1960 studebaker

Sounds kinda like the truck arm suspension of old Chevy 2wd trucks.

Gotta love an early christmas.

Rebuilt 8.5" pressure plate assembly(.5" larger than stock to better hold all that power), 100amp alternator kit, and rubber and spring isolated powdercoated dual compressor mounts.

Yeah like the c10 trailing arms just quite a bit shorter.

and they did have trac/panhard bar on them original . so you will prob have to also .

I don't know why more people don't do it . stupid simple and for most it would be more than needed .

Been picking away at a few items in the engine bay. I cut down a ruff stuff battery tray and bolted it in, replaced the battery leads and starter relay, cleaned and painted the horn, hood prop rod, and irreplaceable fiberglass heater core shroud. On the hood rod I also slid two rubber grommets onto it so to isolate it from the inner fender. I also put four rubber washers under the battery tray to protect both surfaces.

I'm really liking the contrast between the black and blue.

Been plugging away at a few things. The supplied bracket for the alternator conversion didn't line up the belt quite right so I slotted the holes to get it where it needed to be.

I started working on the rear trailing arms but my 12 year old welding cable decided it didn't want to hold shield gas any longer and started leaking somewhere in the sheathing so while waiting for that to arrive I cut some templates for the trunk subfloor.

I made 3 separate ones then overlaid them together and traced one big template. I still want to have a spare tire so I'm going to hinge the platform somewhere near the end of the wheel wells.

I also scored a never used Offenhauser dual carb intake and linkage from a local guy.

I'm diggin that manifold upgrade, can't wait to see what the carbs and filter setup will look like.

My welder is back up and running so I was able to continue on with some suspension work over the holiday weekend.

The trailing arm links are mocked up and seem like they are going to work well for what I need. I'm going to add more gussets under the plate.
and I have new u bolts on the way.

Is that utilizing the existing front leaf spring mount? Looks awesome. This is how I was envisioning bagging my 52 dodge. Do you have a source for the flathead 6 parts? A friend of mine just bought a 53 Studebaker pickup with the big flat 6 (241 I think?) and he's looking for a place to get parts.

Yup it just uses the original front leaf mount simple and effective. I've been getting parts mostly from studebakerparts.com, studebaker-intl.com, and studebakerswest.net but have also grabbed a few things from ebay and craigslist.

It's been awhile since I last updated this thread so I'll bring it back up to speed. A little while ago I picked up a '64 studebaker 259 from a guy in hayward, ca with the intention of getting it rebuilt and dropping it into the car but changed direction after seeing the price of a rebuild kit is more than a ready-to-run 4.8l vortec (LS based) V8 from pacific fabrication not to mention the 4.8 is about 100lbs lighter, has about 100hp more plus all the other advantages of modern fuel injection. So I recently sold the 259 and am in the process of selling the OD trans and original flathead 6.

I also decided to take the suspension in a slightly different direction as well. Instead of bags I'm going to run some QA1 coilovers and build a sort of pro-touring ratrod studebaker, have the interior done in probably a simple black vinyl with front buckets and make it a clean, fast, strange little car. I also ordered classic black and yellow plates that read "FASTUDE"

I plan on swapping in a Z06 cam kit and running a fabricated intake manifold to get a little more power out of the 4.8 as well.

And to handle the power I picked up two ford 8.8s for the price of one on a 50% off pick-n-pull sale. Both disc and limited slip but one is 4.10 for my cherokee and the other is 3.73 for the studebaker.

Well now. That escalated quickly

Funny, I said the same thing earlier but a bunch of posts disappeared including that one.

I'm digging the 4.8 idea but I was wondering what if any firewall and or tunnel mods will need to be done? Are you going to run the 4l60e?

Haha a little but might as well get it over with early.

Yeah that's odd because I had gotten a notification but didn't see any new replies, oh well.

The firewall and tunnel should be fine for the most part I'm thinking, the 259 v8 and automatic were an option on the Lark, dubbed the Lark VIII so it has a fairly substantial tunnel already. I plan on running the 4l60e.

I also pulled the interior and wiring the other night, this thing had 2 main fuses and a 3rd inline for the radio, unbelievably simple.

No picture update, but I placed my order for the 4.8 with pacific fab, 4-5 weeks out which will give me some time to work on the floor. Also went ahead and ordered some universal mounts, an alternator only bracket and a lifting plate from dirty dingo and a basic universal wiring harness from speedway.

My older brother found a place in CT that had a bunch of NOS Stude parts, and some aftermarket high performance stuff--he bought a high compression aluminum head for his 170 cid six in his '41 Champion he had from there...he heard about it through a Studebaker club he was a member of,that publishes a newsletter ..

I dont hear from him very often, but next time I do, I'll try to remember to ask him what the name and adress of the place is..

He also was lucky to get a chance to buy a lot of NOS parts from a Studebaker dealership in his town, the guy who ran it was in his late 90's when he got hold of him,and he let him go through the building--which was like a time capsule he said--I never went inside, but he said it was several floors "packed" with parts and accessories...sadly,the place was sold a few years ago,the old man passed away (over 100 years old!)--and most of the stuff went right in scrap dumpsters..there was even several old Studebakers in the basement that were traded in for new ones he never sold, one was a wagon that had a roll up rear roof section..

When this car is finished my plan is to road trip it along route 66 to visit a friend in wisconsin as well as the studebaker museum and plant in south bend, indiana.
I plan to do a rt. 66 trip in an old car some day. If you make that trek, hit me up. Im near the wisconsin boarder, north of where rt 66 ends

I was kind of excited to see the original engine it if.

Would a T5 or T56 fit?

Martin
