Pics of topless first gen's w/ roll cages/bars

- what material did you use for the cage?
- how'd you bend the tube/pipe?
- is it tied into the frame?

Thanks man - the short answer is its a modified version of a BroncoBob cage.

I took his standard K5 8-pt cage that he makes, and modified some dimensions to rake the rear hoop and make it taller etc.

Then I welded it together myself and bolted it down (Its shipped via pre-bent individual pieces of tube)

Its got 8 feet, each with four grade 8 bolts, and all the feet have plates on both sides that are offset in dimension to not sandwich through the body.

The bottom plates are then welded to the frame with kickers

Thanks guy appreciate the compliements -

Here is a short story on the doors - pre-event for the build details :waytogo:

The door bars are the original roll bars turned sideways :dunno:

Wow. I thought I was creative. You clever SOB, I would have never thought of that! Damn good idea. And whoops I learned something today.

This is where you head out to that epic K5 and take lots of pictures. Pretty much everyone here is a picture whore here! Lots of cage pics & where you tied into the frame etc. No one will ever complain about TOO many pictures :D

Haha right on thanks man - it was one of those accidental redneck epiphanies you get after several beers one night and somehow it ends up as doors bars. The good part is - they work great, they kept the original parts in the family, and they were extremely affordable :thumb:

For sure! I love me some pictures too - pretty much everything i learned or came up with on this build was from somebody elses pictures mixed in.

I left my build hanging in mid stream when my membership expired about 3 years ago, but have all the history still and will update my build to current status over the weekend with 3 years worth more pics.

In the meantime you can get alot of the cage details on pages 7-9 of my build - which i had posted prior to falling off the face of the earth.

Thanks gentlemen - its been a good project for me. Ive accidentally came across some good ideas here and there.

To speak the whole truth, one of my favorites and most usefull add-ons is the underseat drawers. Throw a couple 12v heated blankets in there and provide a couple cig plugs for the rear occupants and all of a sudden your passengers have more fun on the night runs and wintery trips etc...

Nice rig. I have a couple questions. I brought a bronco Bob roll cage like yours. Bob screwed up my order and it has two different size heights for the uprights and he didn't ship the front cage either. He is shipping the front cage and I can figure out what tube to cut down. If you have any interior pics showing where they are mounted? Any tips would be appreciated as well. Also where did those nerf bars?

Hey thank you, and sorry to hear about the BB mixup. Maybe I got lucky on my shipment?....Needless to say there is a shortage of options when looking to purchase a first gen cage and so a lot of time I suspect we will have to be dynamic and make do with a few things - field fitting etc.

I will try and help as much as I can for sure.

Mine came with 2 "hoops", for lack of a better term. One for behind the front seats and one for behind the back seats. I asked for a pretty big rake in my rear hoop so that made it easier to tell them apart on mine. These 2 pieces covered 4 of the 8 total footers or feet plates.

Then I had 2 pieces shaped like a "door" opening. I tried drawing some lines in the pics to see where im trying to describe. These 2 pieces were the hardest part for me. They are shaped like an upside down "L" and use the middle "hoop" as the rear vertical support. I remember I had to cut back the horizontal portion a bit before tacking it to the middle hoop. This I think was to allow wiggle room in your rake to match the angle and gap around the windshield These covered 2 of the 8 footers - one is beside the parking brake in the floor board and the other in the same spot on passenger side.

Then there was 1 crossbar along the top of the windshield between the "door" shaped pieces.

Two runners LT and RT that go from middle hoop to Rear hoop (with bends at each end to triangulate better with the hoops.

Two short bends that go diaganol from the middle hoop down to the wheel well arches. (2 of 8 footers here as well).

Also where did those nerf bars?

I made them out of 5" Tube and 2" Tube for the supports...and some flat plate to cover the reveal. Used probably 4-5 horizontal kickers per side to the frame and 2 at 45deg angles to the frame up by the front shock towers. I will prob need to snap some more pics - not sure what all I have saved on the old hard drive.

Thanks foe the pics and description, they help out a lot. My rake on the back hoop is not as great yours. Bob cut the front hoop 4" to long so it was confusing at first. I will put my top back on so I know it will fit with the cage on. My horizontal tubes look short, but can tell for sure until I get the front cage. I know good fabricator who has a tube notcher so I am going to get him to weld it for me. Trying to decide rocker replacement first or roll cage. Again thanks for the tips.

Just finished this one today:
