Pole barn advice - siding done, power in

Aren't you doing 12' walls on top of a course or two of blocks?

Martin

The rods show you where the doors are going to be. The drain in the center just dumps out in the woods, kind of behind that stack of blocks. Right where the tree line starts there, the ground drops about a foot. The blocks are 6x8x16 rough-faced, so they will look just like the garage 8x8 blocks, except the 2x6 framing will sit nicer on these. I just got done insulating the inside of the block in the garage and that wider block is kind of a pain to insulate, especially around the doors. With the 2" foam board and the framing, I have about a 6" shelf running around 3 sides in there. You can see the miter-cut blocks for the corners sitting near each corner.

AFAIK, you wait 7 days to start setting block.

Openings for the doors are 9'2".

Sounds like trusses may not here until 01-Nov, so for now it will be sill plates, back-fill and cutting seams. They say this weather is perfect, so you don't have to water or cover the pad.

Windows are on me. I'll keep an eye for a deal on something and then frame and install myself. There was some kind of shortage on windows this summer and the prices were silly, so I said to just skip it.

That said, I'm not really sure what I want to do.

So @76zimmer votes for no windows? https://ck5.com/forums/threads/flyin-rat-garage.327512/post-3693903

Other opinions?

I had a giant timber frame barn with no electricity and no windows, so you had to open the doors to see anything. Those old buildings typically have gaps in the boards that allow light in, but this one had steel siding installed over the century-old wood. I replaced one of the man doors with a window one and it helped a lot. I did the same thing in my old garage and it helped a lot for just going in to grab things without having to fire up 20 light fixtures (the only window was in the attic ). I applied that frosted paint to the inside of both windows. You could argue that the windows are easy to break, but it's pretty naive to think either of those buildings would have been hard to break into (especially because they were usually unlocked!).

I would definitely do windows. My 1250 Sq ft garage has two on the side where I park my toy hauler 5th wheel. It blocks them mostly and days when it's not there the amount of light coming in makes a huge difference.

Right on buddy!
big winds on Saturday down here how about up there?

Lookin' nice.

Add my vote to the pro-window camp. More light = more better.

Your area is famously sunny all year round (ok, maybe it's not :surepal:), so I'd think you'd want to capture as much light as you can.

And there's no rule that says you can't have skylights in a shingle roof. Yes, it's harder than pro-sky panels would be, but it's still worthwhile.
