AND THATS ALL!!!!!! If you dont know by now that macco has a 50-50 reputation then google it. Everyone knows they do bad prep and so on and so on. Your $299 paint job didnt turn out good? Shocking... This is not a debate thread. So, with that, this thread is for people to post pics of there macco paint jobs and tell the story of how they thought the paint job went.

:D

I was going to have them do my Blazer unti that 299 turned into an 1000 job because it was 2 tone, I wanted a FLAT / Semi-Flat and it was a truck (they charge extra for that). So buyer beware and do your homework

Looking forward to seeing this thread. I was going to put a super nice paint job on my 70, but just purchased a new Mustang so it's now relegated to the driveway. I just want it to look decent, but since I plan on driving it in the winter don't want it to pristine so it may be headed to Maaco in the near future.

A co-worker of mine did 90% of the prep work , and supplied them with the paint. he basically had them spray it, semi gloss black on a 65 Buick. I think it came out very nice. I think the quality varies by location also, some near me are good, some not so much.

it all depends on who's squirting... they all generally have outstanding booths, equip, etc... it's all in who's pulling the trigger..

I've seen 2 Maaco's in one town, one rocked, the other I wouldn't let paint a doghouse...

here is the best pic I have. My bud bought this truck at action with body damage for $5500.

It was messed up but with some body work and a $3000 yes $3000 macco paint job. It looks like this. (see pic above :) )

Macco. They did 50% the prep work and paint for only 700. Paint job is a few years old and still looks good. I wax it once a month and its garage kept, so that might help.

I have used them twice... The first time I carried my 78 Cj7. It was pretty bad, I sanded it down removed everything and carried it in on a roll back. All they really had to do was spray it. I had the inside, roll cage, and outside done. It was around $600.00, and was done about 10 yrs. ago. I too keep it in the garage and keep a good coat of wax on it. I was and still am pleased for the price. I later carried my 91 K5... Wish I still had it! It was red that was faded out really really bad, but it was straight as can be. I took the top off drove it in, they sanded and painted it including the door jams for like $700.00. They did a damn good job. Wish I still had her! Here is a pic of the Cj I still have... Sorry no pics of the K5. :(ImageUploadedByTapatalk1340555570.895651.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1340555586.697901.jpg

It still looks pretty decent aside from a few parking lot dings. What was frustating for me is that they painted over the seals for the camper shell so they are dry rotted now and leak. The paint chips around the bottom part of the truck but thats all in the prep work

Mine originally looked like this:

It's the $500 Maaco treatment.
The 'two-stage' special.

It lasted just over a year, before it started splitting.
Flexing the body prolly didn't help that much either...

I had my 79 c20 pickup painted my maaco in San Bernardino, CA. I stripped everything I could from the truck:mirrors, lights, bumpers, trim, interior guages, weatherstripping, etc. I wanted base/clear but they said they would only do single stage on older vehicles. It would have been $3k + for single stage. I settled on single stage urethane two tone for around $1000. It had a lot of surface rust, but the body was pretty good. I did the welding repairs (just small stuff) and some of the bigger dents with bondo. They skimmed a number of small dents. The hood was a new steel cowl-induction style. I asked them to carefully mask the fender emblems and to not got paint on the new engine or tires/wheel. I wanted the newer bright white GM paint. Mine was originally frost white (not quite bright white) and medium to dark blue stripe. I thought about metallic blue for the stripe this time. They said they would shoot the white and I could get back to them about which blue to use. The ended up shooting the original blue, but then put a yellowish off white on the rest of the truck.

When I went to pick it up, the tweeters for my stereo were missing. The wires were cut. I had put the tweeters in plastic bags and stuffed them in the rear corners of the cab. Everything else was stripped from the truck by me (other than the seat). They claimed they got broken into and parts were stolen. BS. My truck looked like a POS compared to the other cars there. Why would they even bother with mine when it looked stripped. I'm sure it was the wetbacks doing the prep work.

I looked over the truck and found probably 60+ flaws in the paint. From runs, to bad prep, to overspray on the engine, tires, and the emblems. I told them I could have masked the emblems if necessary. I am a professional building painter. The guy that ran the shop wanted me to leave. I was yelling at him and he was probably worried that I would kick his ass for the crap work.

They paid for a new set of speakers and I made them repaint the whole truck. They also had issues with buffing through the paint and also loosing their spray guy. They shot factory colors the second time. It looked much better, but was still a maaco paint job. They gave me a quart or so of the white paint so I could shoot the interior myself. I had them do the jambs, but didn't trust them to do the inside, even before I saw their work.

I sprayed the interior on 4th of july weekend. The temp got up to over 100 degrees that day. The paint went on nice, but an hour or two later it started to run down the bottom of the dash. I mixed the paint as they said with the chemicals they supplied me. Their formula or paint was bad. It should have never taken that long to tack up. The interior paint still looks great.

That all took place in 2003. The paint is quite hard and brittle. When the truck has gotten hit with different things, it chips the paint and leaves a dent. The paint should bend with the metal. I hate waxing vehicles, so it only got washed, never waxed. It has always been outside in the SoCal weather. It has some tiny spots of possible rust forming on the paint. Clay bar might clean it up. It has held up pretty well for such a crap job, but I also baby my paint.

My k5 was painted by the PO's friend. It is base/clear. The base is red with white over it. It looks white until the sun hits it, then you can see the red glow through. It is probably 7+ years old. It wasn't done by maaco, but it is also brittle. Now it is starting to separate from the sealer coat. I wish I knew why auto paint ends up brittle and without adhesion.

It all depends on who does the work.

never had work their personally and I dont have pics but there is an older man from my home town that got his farm truck painted at macco. Was real excited about it and it looked ok from 30 feet or so. They taped the glass, mirrors, head and tail lights and thats it. Didnt bother to remove the factory pin striping or tape any of the chrome trim:haha::haha:

Have no idea how long it lasted but the old man was happy with it so I guess thats all that matters.

when I called Maaco, to ask about prep, this is what they told me:

They just sand the clear off, and fill major dents.... w/ bondo.
Then, spray it.

That's the 'explanation' I got....

Years ago a buddy got an Earl Scheib ( same thing as Maaco basically) paint job on his Charger. He payed 500 bucks in the late 90s, could have done it for 300 but he had them spray extra coats of clear.

We did all the prep work, I mean all of the prep work. Took it into them on a trailer. They sprayed it we got it back and proceeded to do a bit a sanding and buffing. Well we just did what my buddies Dad told us to do.

Turned out great I mean really great.

But we should have listened to my buddies Dad should have rented a booth in town and done it ourselves. With all the sanding we did pre and post and all that sand paper we could have done it ourselves and done a better job ( they didn't paint the jams or anything like that)

I have had a couple of friends do it and it always costs more and they were always somewhat dissatisfied.

Its an inexpensive paint job treat it like it is and call it good

I macco paint a 84 mustang that I pieced together. The body was all sanded, primed and sealed. I sanded down some fups and rattle canned more clear over the whole car..... the car didn't rust away in the 5yrs that I kept seeing it, and it looked good from 20ft

I have sence painted a truck myself and paid 5k for a repaint to a 85 suburban that looked GREAT

I have been happy with the job I got. it's a 800 dollar paint job it's not perfect but far from dissatisfied.
It's a little over a year old and doing fine.
