Post your macco paint job and success/fail story.*Got a quote for $1444*

Thinking more about it, you are probably right. It just makes me nervous to let someone just have there way with the truck. Maybe its my attempt at trying to latch on to what last bit of control i feel like i have over the situation. I dunno. I might call them back ask if its still just $100 difference. If it is i might just let them do it. Specially the rear bumper. I have no interest in taking that thing off. We'll see. Im mostly just affraid that they are underestimating it as is to get my business. Then when i go to pick it up its a whole bunch more. Kinda worried about that too. So like i said, we'll see. I still have my buddies truck in the garage anyway so i cant start taking it apart till maybe next week.

it took me a whole day of sweat and bloody knuckles to get my rear bumper off because of seized nuts and bolts...it's a PIA to get anything in there to cut them loose

I would have paid $100 for somebody to have removed my rear bumper alone...

On the bright side my rear bumper is FKD! So i could grind the heads off if need be. THe front has been off somewhat recently.

My parents neighbor retired from the Army and opened a Maaco in the mid 90's. As one of the previous posts mentioned, they're all run by individual owners. The Maaco corporation helps get the store up and running, train the new owners, and then you're left alone. The 8% franchise fee gets you a huge discount on paint from their supplier and the local advertising you see on TV, that's it. Some of the Maaco's are huge shops that turn out nice work and crank out a lot of collision work per week. Many shops are poorly run and put out crap.

It's all what you expect. For the standard $400 paint job, they should feather out scratches and chips, wipe the car down, mask it and apply a single stage Enamel paint. Any body work, stripping off old peeling paint, or upgrade quality of paint is extra. The car will have some orange peel and possibly a LITTLE dirt in the paint. Trust me, they can put out 8 to 10 cars on any given day.

Again, if you're thinking about using Maaco, go by a few local shops (if available) and walk through the parking lot and check out the quality of their work.

Anyone who wants a better job, go to a "real" collision or restoration shop and get a price from them. It will be a much better quality job, but you'll pay for it. It's up to you and your wallet :-)

Well said. I happened to catch the owner jaw jacking with somebody. They said they painter 8 cars last week.

You need to ask if they are taking them off for sure, and not just taping them off.

That's right, most Maaco shops won't take the bumpers, glass, mirrors, door handles, etc off. For that extra $100 labor they will probably only tape them off.

Good point. That being the case, i will just handle it myself so that i know whats going on there.

Out of curiosity which Maaco did you drive by? I've seen some decent paint jobs come out of the Clackamas 212 Maaco. I eat lunch at that Subway every so often, and have seen a nice first gen bronco, an older mustang, and a jeep that all looked decent to me...

The one out in Gresham. Where burnside and devision meet. A guy i work with had his samuri painted at the clackamas one. It looks good form 15 feet. Up close there are lots of defects. Honestly tho, thats all im really shooting for. A 15 footer.

What are you doing about the rust on the roof? Are you going to treat it first? Or just have them sand and shoot over it?

I might cruise up to the one in vacouver. They seem like they may be a little more with it. One way or the other i think my mind is made up to give them a shot. And on the roof, yes, i will give them explicit instructions that say to sand down all the rust(just surface rust any way) and i will also insist that i be let check on the truck daily.

The advantage to having them do the bumpers is that if they scratch the new paint during re-assembly - it's on them. Now what they would do about that depends on the shop.

For $400, I would fix the dent myself. If I was using Maaco, I would do all of the bodywork and have that perfect. If anything shows up once they shoot it, you probably can't get them back to the bodywork without breaking out the checkbook again.

I would also pull all the window trim, emblems, mirrors and junk like that becasue they won't. The last few things like tailights and such you can pull in their parking lot (unless you have a trailer to bring it in?). The drawback is that with no door handles you can't lock the truck, but that shouldn't cause any new problems since the truck should be painted with the hard-top removed anyway. Everything they paint around will get an imperfect finish next to it. Anything they tape that will touch the paint will have a line to it, so the more you can remove the better.

Ask about masking off the inner fenders and undercarriage because overspray down there is noticeable.

Most Maaco shops will not pull bumpers, mirrors, etc. unless you pay them extra. Like Blue85 mentioned, pull that stuff yourself.

Don't be surprised if they don't let you in the shop to check on the car. It's an assembly line and they can't afford to have customers picking cars apart and slowing things down. Remember, it's still a VERY discounted paint job. You'll have some imperfections.

To be honest, once you car gets in the assembly line, it could be started and finished in the same day. You'll never have a chance to check on progress :-)

I can't remember if you mentioned or not... but if you can afford it, pay for the Urethane paint upgrade and the integrated clear.

So its looking like i will start disassembling the truck Monday. Hope to have it dropped off by Monday the 30th. At that, it should be back to me about August 13th. Shich should leave me just enough time to get it assembled before winter hits...

Went to a shop that i had heard good things about and pretty much got what i expected. $3500 and 1 to 2 months... I just can't do that and don't want that. So pretty much maaco it is.

$3500 is definitely alot of money, but would be considered a good deal around here. The lowest quote I got to repaint my Blazer was $5000. I spent that on my last muscle car and it turned out nice, but I plan on driving the Blazer in the winter and parking it outside. I'm looking forward to seeing how yours turns out.

Sound like they do good work and people are happy with them.
Good luck with it. Its all about the prep work and the guy spraying it.

I'm just glad I have a couple of real close friends that paint for a living to help me.
