Potent Rodent

New built engine, EFI, 4L80 transmission, t-case, brakes, hydroboost, tires/wheels and more!
no no problems I looked them all over years ago and they seemed just fine .

these are the comp units .

I was just picking was all.

Exactly. Which ignition coils would you suggest? Believe it or not, my goal is this summer. Not having to work on the Evo is a huge time saver now. Did you Dad ever tell you about the ride I gave back when it was only making 700whp?

Thats been SO long ago I don't even remember selling them but I don't believe so. I think I had 2 sets. One set came from Comp. Are you having any problems with them?

Haltech Elite 2500. My tuner has talked me into going DBW so this might get interesting but no more throttle linkage.
I'm still using stock gm coils on my buggy. Not sure if PacFab upgraded the ones Stephen has in the convertible truck or not. I'm kind of on the run what you brung wagon right now. I'm feeding off all the race effort spares and left overs then not sure what I'll be doing. Wanting s 4 seater buggy and a camping rig crew cab, so we'll see which actually happens.

Ok cool. Get that sucker running! Not that I'm the one that should talk....

Thanks for the info. Now I just need figure how to mount them to the SBC... Would love to see the new toys if you get em.

Dang! I remember this truck from way back. This was sort of an iconic build for me, so glad to see it making a comeback.

Remote mount the coils on the firewall or something and then run wires? I know there are remote mount kits for the LS stuff I just don't know what exactly is involved.

Thanks! Good to see I inspired a few back in the days. I was going to ask Fox if I could post all the tech articles here just for reference since you can't find them on the original site.

"Guess who's back? Back again..."
Yet again... Past couple of years, the race car kept pulling me back when it kept hurting the engines. I was on engine #5.

They do make some cool billet mounts. Not sure the best place yet. I may get the billet mount and see what works the best. May just need to keep them on top of valve covers. They are alum valve covers so it would be easy to weld some threaded bungs or maybe make some brackets off the intake bolts.

As for the coils I decided to ditch the Accel LS1 coils and go with factory GM truck LQ9 truck coils since they put out more volts. These are the ones with the heat sink and look to have more coil size. There's also some aftermarket ones but I think the factory is the way to go with reliability. Many high HP Supra guys are running these coils too.

LS1/LS6 # D580 -GM # 12558948- 30,000 Volts
LS2/LS3/LS7 # D514A GM # 12573190 - 32,000 Volts
LS Truck # D585 GM # 10457730, 12563293 - 35,000 Volts

This isn't good. No room for bottom radiator hose with the new crank trigger installed. Looks like I need to remove the pump and weld an extension or AN fitting on it.

What is old is new again! I credit your build, along with Stephen's and Fox's, with providing early inspiration to build more than just a "lifted truck."

Subscribed for continued greatness.

Just ordered all this crap. It never ends...

GM LQ9 Truck coils

MSD oil pump drive (no more distributor)

Still need some sensors, and Haltech wide band kit. Trying to decide if I want 1 or 2 oxygen sensors.

@folkenheath has been whispering in my ear for months that I should convert to a DIS system on my 502.....

It would certainly resolve all of my distributor-to-firewall clearance issues, but from the looks of things... it might create new waterpump-to-cranktrigger ones up front!!!!

Thanks! Hopefully it will get there in running state this year.

I have similar thoughts Greg. I was going to leave it naturally aspirated for now and do some type of forced induction next year (most likely turbos) but the more I think about, it will be easier to do it now and only one tune/dyno session instead of two. The only problem is the added cost at this time.

I think they make some smaller trigger wheels so there's other ways to do it. The MSD oil pump drive will definitely free up some room in the back and get rid of any bulky distributor. With the Haltech, theres no need for cam sensor according to my tuner but I'm still skeptical of that until its running. I'm not sure how you are controlling your 502 but this new Haltech does so much including controlling a 4L80E. Doesnt do me much good since I converted my trans to manual valve body but there's always that option if I decide to go back to the electronic method.

Shawn,

I ended up going with the Holley Terminator EFI... which is their offering for a consolidated EFI/TCU controller. The ECU is fully programmable for timing curves which is nice, but apparently even with a "locked out" dizzy it's not a slam dunk. Going DIS makes the whole process simpler to control.... and since I already paid for the capability to do full timing control, why not make use of it? :deal:

Keep spending money, and posting pics!!! :)

The newer Holley setups are pretty good these days. Originally I wanted something that controls fuel, timing, spark, ethanol (flex fuel), boost, low impedance or high impedance injectors, throttle (DBW), cruise control, launch control and is laptop configured. It also has many safety features built in such as fuel pressure. knock, etc. Its just more of a pain to install and configure. Sometimes I wish I did a plug and play system or crate LS engine with the pre-tuned ECU. Hope it pays off.

Got the new turbo headers and all the hot parts today. Mounted the headers for test fit. A little close to the larger fabricated valve covers but would still work. Spark plug wires would be tight though. May order the tall cast aluminum "CHEVROLET" valve covers for more clearance.

Wow, scrolling through the pics and stuff. 1) I am guessing this is before Tom Nelson started using symmetrical/opposite turbo's. 2) At $5000, Nelson is very proud of their turbo headers!!
