It's possible that ip is not good anymore.
It should do more than just wetness

I was worried about this being a possibility...

Glow plugs working?

I don't for sure know. I'm going to test them tonight maybe. I might just go ahead and order some new ones anyways to be sure. I doubt new ones would hurt anything.

It’s alive!

So I pulled the top off of the injection pump and it was dry. I walked up to my in laws shop (they live really close) and got a diesel can and some jumper cables as I drained the batteries some yesterday. I dumped the diesel into the pump and put the top back on. Tried it and nothing. Still just cranking. So I started checking for fuel everywhere. My father in law seen me carrying the diesel can across the yard and ended up coming down to see how it was going.

We were talking it out and started thinking something could be wrong with the fuel filter housing or fuel filter. I pulled the lines off and had pressure on the output that runs to the injection pump.

I hooked the lines up backwards when I done the spin on filter conversion…

Idiot…

So I switched them and tried it again. Now I was getting diesel to the injection pump cause now I had a major leak under the intake. The stupid mice had chewed a hole in the fuel line that runs to the injection pump from the filter. Luckily I had some more fuel line in the shop. So I replaced that and cranked it and started getting some fuel out of the injectors. Tightened them all back up and cranked it and she spit and sputtered and came to life. I let it run for a bit and tried to check for leaks with a crappy flashlight since it’s dark and my good flashlight died on me. I didn’t see any the best I could tell but I’ll check again tomorrow or the next day as we are supposed to get some rain/severe weather tomorrow/tomorrow evening.

I did shut it off and it fired right back up. I'm excited.

In doing the 12 volt conversion, I moved the driver side alternator to the passenger side. The one that was on the passenger side didn't seem to be charging. I need to check and make sure that one is for sure charging.

I also need to finish cleaning up the wiring from the 12 volt conversion. Its all done, just need to zip tie some wires back and make it look a little better.

Going to change the oil in it soon since its been setting. Hoping to also get the one inch body lift and new body bushings thrown on it soon too. Now with it running, I can pull it in and out of my in laws shop to work on it.

Im hoping to make it to a big truck show in April called The Truck Gathering. But we shall see. Plus just kind of excited to be driving it again hopefully. Need to stop on the way home and get the new sticker for this coming year for the tags.

So I did briefly check the alternator last night and I don't believe it is charging. I believe it is something on the truck side and not the alternator itself. I did not dig into it last night as we had some severe weather moving in and i got to watching that.

I did drive it down the driveway and back though! I missed driving the dang thing.

Did you make sure the alternator is grounded?
On the curve the second alternator is not grounded to the engine to get a 24v in series.

Probably already know this… but make sure sure you’re grounding the stud not the case, isolated ground and all.

I removed the ground wire from the driver side alternator and put it on the passenger side one. Ill double check but I believe it was getting a good ground.

I think its something with the truck. Back when I first realized I had an actual issue with the batteries charging I did a little testing and I don't think the truck is sending the signal to the passenger side alternator telling it to turn on and start charging. I hate electrical and between A) my frustration and B) trying to move, I didn't mess with it much and it just set until now. So I need to look at that again.

That doesn't mean I didn't screw something up though! LOL.

Or that I might not end up swapping it back to the driver side. (probably should've just stuck with that)

I wasn't feeling the greatest last night, plus it was slightly cold and windy so I really didn't do anything with it. I did check though, it appears the exciter wire isn't telling the alternator to turn on and charge when the key is on. I think this is whats been the problem all along. So I might have two good alternators. I found a wiring schematic yesterday for the charging circuit so I'm going to try to use it and chase down my problem hopefully. I am taking this afternoon and tomorrow off and I plan on working on it.

If you have one close by, Vatozone has checked alts for me in the past.

Would eliminate the guessing game.

It's easy enough to check the exciting wire.
Put a tester on it and start the engine, you should see it come on, if not then you have to trace it back and see where the problem is.
You could also excite it while running to see if it starts charging

So I’m pretty confident that this is the diode for the Gen 2 (passenger side) alternator. I have my multimeter hooked up to the brown wire (exciter wire) at the plug on the alternator and chased it to here. With the multimeter on Ohms and the audible on, the multimeter is beeping and I’m only getting .6 ohms of resistance. So that is telling me that circuit is good. Correct?

I’m getting nothing on both sides of the diode so that’s telling me the diode is bad correct?

I hate electrical… and I always second guess myself.

If that is for sure bad, what’s the best replacement?

Edited to add: I bypassed the diode and now with key on I’m getting battery voltage on the exciter wire at the plug on the alternator.

I emailed Hillbilly Wizard to see if they had one.

Might check with Squarebody Salvage or Mike Morin if Hillbilly doesn’t have one.

Is it even needed once you convert to 12 volts?

I temporarily bypassed the diode and the alternator was charging but still only 12ish volts. I swapped to the other alternator that I had removed that was on the passenger side originally and I am now getting 13ish volts. I would feel better if it were 14 plus but I'll keep an eye on it. I started checking into why my volt gauge and temperature gauge were not working as they've never worked since I purchased the blazer. I believe the resistor on the back of the volt meter is bad. With the truck running I am getting 13 plus volts at the plug for the volt meter and I found a video showing to check for 300 ohms of resistance across that resistor on the back of the gauge and I get nothing. So I am going to look at ordering a resistor or possibly just a set of some cheap gauges for now. I found a broken ring terminal under the hood for the temperature gauge and I fixed that but I also have two other wires broke under the dash that I need to fix.

I pulled the crappy aftermarket speakers out from the center spot on the dash as they were already falling out (you can see one hanging in my picture two posts up) and blown anyways. I was looking at some blue tooth radios but I may just go with a blue tooth receiver instead and replace the speakers in the dash. I also wouldn't mind some 6x9s against the sides were the rear passengers feet go. Not going for a large stereo system or anything but want some tunes for cruising around. A previous owner had but a Tuffy console in the blazer and put the radio in it. With the rubber floor covering it hid the wires underneath it but also held moisture and cause the floor to rust out a lot. I want to put the radio/blue tooth receiver back in the dash and not have the wires running across the floor since I pulled the floor covering. I'm hopeful I can get the door seal plates back installed (rusted floor issues) and run the speaker wires for the 6x9s under those to hide them.

Several years ago I ordered LED front turn signal bulbs and the way they are designed I broke one trying to install it. I forgot I had reordered it and found it yesterday so I thought I'd try to install it. Once I removed the passenger side housing, I found the first evidence of mice chewing up any of the factory wiring. They chewed all three wires in two for the front turn signal and both wires for the side marker light. I can fix the wiring for the front but a decent chunk of wire is missing for the side marker light so I am going to order a new connector and hopefully it will come with enough wire.

I also started spraying body mount bolts with penetrating oil in hopes of getting them loose soon to install the body lift and new body bushings.

Been driving around our place. Drove it a couple miles away to my wifes grandpas place to look at why his battery won’t stay charged on a portable corral deal he has. I know, more electrical right! Lol.

The blazer keeps popping the 20 amp power management fuse that controls glow plugs, fuel gauge, and as I found out after dark last night the lights. Luckily I was back at the in laws shop and just had to drive down their driveway and into ours. So not too bad. It wasn’t doing that before it sat and/or before I done the 12 volt conversion. So idk if it’s something I may have messed up or something mice might have chewed up. So gonna have to look at that.

I did order a new light socket for the passenger side front turn signal and side marker light. Should’ve ordered two of each and replaced both fronts of each just because. I also ordered a new wiper switch as mine is broke and allowing the turn signal to flop around. So I currently can’t use my turn signals either. Those things should be here tomorrow and Saturday.

New wiper switch installed….now I’m waiting on a new ignition cylinder cause I broke it trying to get it out. ‍:surepal:

Picked up a new ignition cylinder from Oreilly's last night as they had one in stock and I could get it in my hands and look at in person before purchase. My 84 Blazer has what appears to be a pre 78 (believe that was the year change) ignition cylinder set up in it. This one doesn't have the bolt that holds it in, it has the piece you have to push in while pulling the ignition cylinder out. Which is part of the reason as to how I broke it as it was a little stuck in. I ride as a support rider with the local VFW chapter and we had a riders meeting last night so I didn't get the chance to work on it last night. I'm hopeful I can tonight.

Non blazer related, the wife and I finally filled out paperwork for a loan on a new Solitaire trailer and are approved. So now we are just going through the process to get our order placed and will be getting a new one on order. Once the order is placed, it will be roughly 6-8 weeks waiting on them to build it to our order.

Still need to get started on a shop.

Dropped off down payment yesterday and order for new trailer should be placed today. The plant that builds them are supposedly caught up some so they told us it will probably be more like 4-6 weeks and it should be delivered to our place. Then they will have to come set it up and get everything hooked up obviously before we can move in. In 8ish weeks we should be moving into our new Oklahoma Mansion.
