Project “Bad Grampa”

Not sure what will happen with this truck, but I thought it would be fun to document whatever I do with it anyway. My friend had this truck for sale and asked if I would try and spread the word about it. At first I had ZERO interest in it but when he sent me the pics I had to have it. A two owner rust free grampa truck with 61,000 miles that spent most of its life in Texas... only bad thing is the paint on the hood sucks (a white chevy hood should be easy to find) and reverse was all but gone. Interior is immaculate other than a saggy headliner. Still has the factory stereo! He wanted $2000 which is about half it’s KBB value. I offered $1500 and he took it. PERFECT! Throw a JY transmission in it, fix the headliner, and slap a JY hood on it, and make some $$$. I decided to drive it until the trans completely let loose, while I searched for a good deal on a replacement transmission. Finally found a used one with a 90 day warranty for $500. It was more than I wanted to spend but there was no core charge. Sadly... The transmission lost all gears the day before my replacement shipped out. That figures... so this is where I am today. I’m about to go swap out the transmission and get this thing back on the road. So like I said... I wanted to flip this truck. But after driving it for a couple months I think I’m in love with it!?!? I’m at the point where I can still make money off of it, but I’m also at the point where I have a daily driver with a lot of potential. Soooooo... lets see where this goes!

Leave it looking just as it is.........

And then put about 500hp of quiet under the hood.....

:sleep::sleep::sleep:

:burnout:

Got the old trans out, and I think I found the reason this truck has babaganooked two transmissions in 62k. The TV cable housing was busted loose and pulled out about 1/4”. So thanks to small town USA I have to wait till Tuesday for my new cable to come in. But in the meantime... here are some pics of old stuff and “new” stuff. Cleaned up the donor slushbox and gave it a coat of MF gray (Massey Ferguson guys... let’s keep it PG in here) to make me feel better about myself.

Clean looking truck! I say keep it stock looking and LS with turbo's!
I was watching some videos of a square with an 8.1 and a remote turbo setup that really got me thinking. It wasn’t a hack job by any means but it was redneck all the way and it screamed! I’m working on getting my hands on a wrecked suburban with an 8.1 and depending on how it goes...
An LS would be sweet because of the weight difference compared to a BB but they’re hard to come by around here. One downfall with the suburban is it has an Allison and it’s 4WD. It would be cool to have a 5 speed auto but that would mean I’d have to modify the cab. Don’t know what a used one is worth but maybe it would pay for a 4L80? Idk... this is all just dreaming right now. Lol but they’re fun dreams!

Fix your television yet?
Yep! Adjusted my new cable tv and drove it home from glendo tonight! Mark do you remember when I told you it was surging and asked what it could be? Well... it must have been whatever was broken in the transmission because it’s not doing it anymore.

I like this truck. My vote is to keep it stock and reliable. I know, "why does Greg sound like he is trying to be an adult?", but I have learned to appreciate the value of a stock vehicle. It's nice to know you always have a vehicle that's ready to go for daily tasks.

Yeah I agree with you. Most likely it will get cleaned up and sold BUT if I do keep it I’ll keep it mild but I’ll have to mod it a little. We will see. Either way an 8.1 with turbos is probably not going to happen but I’ll ditch the factory tbi and freshen up the motor.

Ditch the TBI?
Well.. yeah... they don’t work well with things that whistle silly. :haha:

No but depending on how the fitech works on my other truck I’d like to run it on this one with the power adder option so I can run a turbo if I want to.

make sure you flip the lid on that air cleaner ;)
Haha I’ve been thinking about it. I pulled the baffle out of the intake tube already.

And this is how you end up with having 5 trucks like me. Just slowly keep adding them one at a time with the intent to "flip" them. :haha:
Lol this is how I ended up having 5+ trucks! It took some time but all the goodies I bought in 2013 with the intent to sell have been weeded out and most of them are on my 77 now. I did sell a few things. I just might have been a little high on the price when I listed the good stuff on CL. Darn it... hate when that happens!
