Project 82 TCBF -10.13.9 - progress!!!

Now, this could be because I`ve been sick for the past two days, but I`ve been thinking, yeah, I know, what`s new. I`m starting to think that this isn`t going to be a "financially" friendly build for me. I have the money now to do everything, but for some reason I just can`t push myself to go through with it. Like I said previously, I don`t wheel alot, so I don`t really need to build my truck up like I wanted too. In the near future, when school`s done, I`m going to have to start driving the Blazer alot more than I do now, and I don`t think my wallet are going to like the combo of 4.56/35"ers. This may just be the cold talking, but I`m getting ready to just get new tires, 33"ers, and lock the front and rear. I don`t know. Getting new tires will already give me an improvement, as my current tires only measure out to ~31". After adding up alot of the stuff I`m going to have to buy to complete this build, I just can`t see spending that amount of money, when I don`t wheel often enough to need any of it. I would rather spend money to restore my rig, and make it a dependable and worthy DD, that can also be taken out to wheel.

I know it doesn`t really matter to you guys how I build my rig, although some will try to push certain things, but all in all, it shouldn`t matter, as this is my rig.

It pretty much narrows down to this: I have plenty of time to build my rig the way I want it. At this point in my life, being only 17, I`m more interested in making this a more dependable DD. Thank`s to a nice PM from Larry (TexasBlazerBoy), I`ve decided to wait until I am more financially stable to build my rig the way I want it. That way I can do it the way I want, and once. Take this as you may, but it`s final. The plans now are to make this a more dependable DD, which will include new tires, and a locker or 2, just to improve my performance, for when I do go wheelin.
 
I think thats a very good desicion. Everyday I read all posts and build threads and it makes me wanna lift my truck and build it into a better wheeling machine. But this all costs a good chunk of change to do it right and make it dependible. Restoring it is a good idea for now, because your only 17 and dont have enough money to build it up. Your gonna need a lot of money to survive your senior year and for the college daze after high school. I find it hard enough just to fix and repaire the little problems with my stock K5. With a lifted one your gonna have more things to fix down the road. But if your fortunate enough to have the type of parents that will pay for everything them build it up, if not id recommend waiting till you have more money. Im on my spring break and i just rolled out of bed so if this is dumb then oh well.
 
ohh and one more thing... K5's are damn good wheeling machines. Mine handles just fine off road being stock. I have buddies that dump all there beer and fun money buying crap for their toyotas. and I am the one pulling there asses out of mud and snow. just leave your truck how it is, itll do fine with the wheeling you do or have explaind.
 
I'll tell you something, that is one of the toughest decisions a guy can make.

There is no right or wrong decision. But it is unlikely that you will regret the one you've just made. Your time is coming. It is usually at some point just before kids, or just after they go to college!
 
Hey Ben I say go for it if you have the cash in the future then make the best trail rig you can. Yea i know I am building a trail rig now but that is because I also have about 4 other car that I can use for highway and out of town stuff.
My K5 is my in town DD but not for out of town suff. So do what you gotta do brother you'll make the right decisions no matter what.
 
You need to figure out how you want to build it and do it NOW before you get to college and get broke. After you get out of college you'd think that you would have a little money - but then you get married. You'd think you have some money when you get married because it's a dual income situation. Right? Wrong. You get a mortgage and have a couple of kids. You might have some money once you get a little further, but your wife has her hands in it, and generally women would rather have new carpet than a D60. Just $.02 from a guy that's got a few years on you.:thumb:
 
Well, I`m thinking maybe rockwells, 54" boggers, and maybe a jet engine...but, I don`t know....:rolleyes:

time and money

Chalet is right, I been saving for 5 years for my build. Know that I have two boys one 4 and one 9 months old. Build your truck now, however you want, because there is going to come a time when you have to what's best for the misses. Remember she's always right. So do it now! If by some good chance you do have the money, you want have the time between work and baseball and birthdays, and work. So my young friend build it now while you don't have to explain why you spent 600 bucks on shocks, or why you spent the entire weekend in the garage. Listen to a guy who would not trade the last 9 years of marriage for anything. BUILD IT NOW. One more thing I brought my axles, and tires 3 months before the baby got here, and there still not under the truck. BUILD IT NOW!
 
all the big purchases for my truck were made before I had a kid. I could never build the trucks I have now. I don't have to discuss purchase under $100, thats how I am getting away with the mods I'm doing now. buying in peices every couple of weeks. but big stuff has an effect on the whole family.

time is another thing I don't have anymore. As I type this I should be on my way home to dinner with the family. I got 3 hours to wrench yesterday. it was like I had a weekend.

Yeah, you`re right, on some parts. Although I don`t really plan on college, so that gives me a little more time, I suppose..;) and I don`t really see a wifey coming anytime soon, at least not for another 5 or 10 years...remember guys, I`m only 17....

How`s this for a debate topic: Traction Aids. As of right now, I have an open front, and posi rear, which either needs adjusting, or rebuilding, as it only spins the two wheels to a certain point, then its just like an open diff. Should I swap the posi to the front, then put an open carrier in and add a lockright, or just don`t put the posi up front, and put the open carrier in rear and add 2 lockrights. If it helps, I can get another open carrier for free.

Why waste money on a 10 bolt. If your going to keep the front thats cool but doing any thing to the rear is a waste of time and money.14bolts are so cheap and you said your not in a rush so why not pick up a 14 bolt rebuild it. Then get a 8lug front or swap out the parts to make it and 8 lug. Then get the rims. You dont have to do it all in a weekend, space it out. Like every one said its your truck do what you want.

If this is going to be a DD then what happens when you brake the 10 bolt rear? how long will it be down and you not have wheels to get around?

Just some food for thought.
 
Well, I`m only going to be running 33s, so a 14bff would be way too much over kill for me...but maybe a 14bsf?

For a daily driver with 33's, id keep the 10 bolt rear and dont drop any coin on it. Id also keep the 10bolt front. Posi's are perfect for a daily driver that still wants to wheel. 10 bolts around here are cheap if not free so if it blows up, id just put another one in. 14sf are expensive and id not even waste the $ on that. 14ff are my favorite, but like you said if it was staying 33's id not even bother, that will drag some major ass you'd have like 7"-8" of ground clearance not to mention all the crap you have to do to fit it in there.

I drove around for a couple of years with lockrite's front and rear on a 12 bolt and 10 bolt setup on 33's and had no problems even with 3.73's. It was very reliable but the rear lockrite is noisier then a detroit and it was annoying and would not recommend on a dd. Plus there not 195.99 any more. Whats wrong with your setup now? Id only upgrade axles if your going over 35's or if your motor is super pumped up.

There`s nothing wrong with my setup now, except a little more traction wouldn`t be a bad idea. There`s a local who`s running around on a 10b/lockright/35`s, and hasn`t broke yet...except for when he tried a burnout:rolleyes: I can get a 14bsf local for a $100, and it most likely has 3.73 gears, and is already set up to be mounted in my rig, so I may go for that. It will definitely be a lot stronger than a 10b rear, and give me a little insurance...
