Project Blue Truck: '83 C20 - Rolling Chassis

35 spline shaft. Well nevermind then. It would probably cost me some money to find the right output shaft anyway. Thanks anyway.

I figured you missed the 2WD part. I get weird looks when I say I've got a 2WD transmission in my 4WD truck.

I may have found a spot for the upper links to land that clears the oilpan. Its going to require my engine crossmember to jut out towards the front end of the truck to allow the heims clearance.

Once I get back from visiting the inlaws-to-be this weekend I'll jump back on it.

I was also looking into moving my engine over to the driver side a inch or 2 from center also to help allow for driveshaft clearance by the pan. Not sure if that is something to think about at this stage.

I threw a calibrated eyeball on it and it seems like I will be able to clear the link, but the factory transmission crossmember is definitely going to have to go. I plan on running a two piece front shaft to work on snaking it around everything.

On your engine crossmember make sure you leave enough clearence, my motor settle and the pan is now rubbing

Had probably 1/4" on the back side

Yep. I cant get my oil pan off my 454 now that its installed in the truck. And I have a cam and everything for it. The ORD bolt in crossmember might be a good idea down the road for you, as thats what I am going to do.

Im going out on a limb here, but Im pretty sure the 465 can not handle the almost 500 ft lbs of input torque that 8.1 is going to shove down its throat. I could be wrong though.

You are.

The first one I made was set up so that there would be 1/8" of clearance left even if the bushing completely failed and the bolt sleeve was resting on the tube. But it got chopped up to make the steering supports.

I've been pecking away at the steering, trying to get everything lined up so that it all stays above the lower links but below the pinion flange and has the tie rods directly in line with the shaft at full extension to keep side loading down.

The main bars are 1/2 x 2 that's drilled and tapped for the ram to bolt to with 3/16 bottom gussets and 1/4 side gussets. I carried the "three speed holes" theme through it all.:pimp:

I spent a lot of time swapping these in and out of the drill press.

You can see on the left side the bracket had to be trimmed because of the housing curve. I decided to make all of the brackets like they originated on the square tube rather than make them all go to the bottom of the housing so that's why the right side pieces are much shorter. When viewed from the side, all 8 plates line up with each other.

I really need to break down and buy a Powermax 45. A plasma table to go along with it would be the bee's knees as I have every single piece drawn out on the computer.:doah: Cut off wheels get old.

Man, you really do some awesome work. Serious kudos.

Thanks man:waytogo:

I didn't think through the upper link mounts very well when I bought them from Ruff Stuff. While the mounts are great pieces, they just weren't what I needed. I bought them for the threaded bolt holes and the ability to adjust the upper link, but ended up drilling them out since I am using 3/4" bolts and the larger joints I'm using physically wouldn't fit in the top and bottom holes. After extending the top, bottom, and leading edges, boxing them in, drilling the holes, and frenching them into the frame, I feel as though I would have been ahead to just start from scratch. Oh well live and learn.

As I received them you can see how little room there is above and below the joint, not to mention the bushing material overhanging the edge of the metal. Again, there's nothing wrong with the bracket, it just wasn't the right part for these joints. A 7/8" heim would have worked perfectly.

The roughed out frame cut.

This allows me 6-3/4", 8", and 9-1/4" of separation from the lowers. I've still got my work cut out blending the bracket into the frame.

I switched to an easier medium and whittled out a foam board upper link just to see it on the axle.

I'm having them cut out by Mud Pro Metalworks since I don't have enough 3/8" plate on hand, nor do I feel like cutting them out with cut off wheels.

Seems like no matter how many of those things you kill, there's always more. I don't know if when you kill one, two more appear, or if they just come back to life as zombie squirrels and you keep having to shoot the same ones over and over again. :weapon31::zombie15::weapon17:

Not to bring up an old post but i saw this and laughed my ass off :haha:

I really thinned out the herd that first year. No one had been living here for a couple of years so they had learned to roam around with out a care. It wasn't uncommon for me to wake up and find 10 of them. I could normally pick off about five or six of them before they finally scattered. This year I have only killed 6 of them, as the only ones left alive go run and hide as soon as they hear the door knob turn.

In other news, my cutoff wheel expenditure should hopefully go down.:woot:

This thing is FAWESOME!

So freakin jealous!!!!!!! They had two at the shop i learned to weld at. Loved both of em!

I've never used a plasma before... I'm not sure how I lived with out it. From laying out the lines to having parts on the floor took about 5 minutes.:pimp:

I think my steady hand needs some practice.:haha:

I have this problem as well. I have resorted to opening the window quietly, and shooting them from inside of my house.....

:haha::haha::haha:I have the same problem. Damn things chew on my drip irrigation and make little geysers everywhere when they turn on. I got a beefy pellet gun thats pretty quiet and get them from and open window then wait 15-20 min between shots :weapon24:

For straight cuts, lay down a piece of angle and use it as a guide for the plasma tip :thumb:

Gamo. Ultimate pellet gun. Silenced, bi-pod, and scope. Lethal.

And plasmas are the bee's knee's. I loved using it, cuts plate like no oxy torch.

I live out in the country and don't have a neighbor within a mile in any direction. I use a 12 gauge.
