Project Frostbite 1 ton K5 build

Sooooooo being as I have been a big slacker with posting the updates for this build on here I have a tremendous amount to upload.:surepal: That being said there is a lot I have done since the time of starting this build tell now. I've basically done this build in three stages and currently on the third. So rather than just jumping to what I'm currently doing to it I'd like to get caught up on posting everything that I have previously done to it since there is still some neat things along the way I have done with it up to its current state. There will be a decent amount of "copy and paste" from my other thread so bare with me. :dunno::D

Been busy cranking away at the k5 the past week and got a decent amount knocked out!

My shackle flip came in so I gave them a fresh coat of paint and just bolted them on.....right after the super fun factory brackets removal
shaking.gif
those rivets are always a pain to get out but the air chizzle seemed to make quick work of it this time. Really liking how well built these brackets are and how well they fit!

Got the rear axle all mocked up and the finish welds done. I ended up setting my pinion angle 2 degrees before 0 since I will be towing a fair amount with it. It should end up being just about right under normal cruising speeds and light towing. I've typically tried to set the pinion angle on past projects suited towards what ill mostly be doing with the vehicle and I think this setup should work good but I'm always open to hear what other people have done! I also left the ubolts a bit longer so I've got room to add a 1 inch zero rate block if I need to to level it out.

Transfer case is also in and fits great but I will definitely be making a new beefier crossmember and adding a tcase support so I don't have to worry about cracking the case as well as adding some skid plate protection around that area.

Since I got the rear axle and tcase in I was able to measure for my driveline length and have it shortened. I picked up a 2006 F350 super duty front driveline since it has a factory 1350 cv and a 1350 ujoint at the axle and they are really cheap to pick up at a wrecking yard!
biggrin.gif
I will be using the same f350 driveline for the front eventually but for now I am going to use the factory one to get me by since its bolt in and I dont have a 1350 yoke for the dana 60 yet. These drivelines are great for the guy not wanting to spend tons of money to have custom ones done. I'm into the driveline $95 for the driveline and $80 to have it shortened.

All in all everything with the rear seems to be going together how I want it with a few changes here and there that will happen a little later. Shock location will be a definite thing I want to change later cause both the front and rear locations suck! And bending new brake lines to fit around the new brackets.

Was able to get my exhaust all done yesterday aside from the tips. I ended up using a kit that was suppose to fit a square body fairly well but went the complete oposite....
shaking.gif
ended up cutting it up a lot to make it fit but I think it turned out good. The kit is all 2.25 inch tubing and the mufflers I used were thrush. I've used them before and they seem to sound good for the price. I may end up changing it all out to bigger diameter pipe later but for now this will work. Got the headers all painted and put in as well.

My shocks also came in today so Ill toss those on after work. Since aftermarket shocks tend to get spendy for a good set and I plan on changing my shock locations later for a longer stroke I went with shocks from a stock ride height 2002 Ford F250 front and rear. With 4 inches of lift on the k5 these shocks measure out perfectly with the up/down travel being about even front and rear.

Been one busy month busting ass to get this think knocked out and I am getting excited to finally drive it!

Things left to do:
-brake lines
-finish buttoning up the engine
-front driveline
-finish clutch pedal setup

Well I got the rest of the k5 all buttoned up enough to go out this weekend for its first test run! Everything seemed to work good other than the shitty military tires. Its soooo nice having that nv4500 in there for that highway cruise to the mountains!
biggrin.gif
Even the clutch bracket that's half done even held up haha. Although it did good there's still a big list of changes/upgrades I plan to do very soon.

Well I found out yesterday that I'm off work tell April 3rd!
thefinger.gif
So that being said I am going to go ahead and throw a bunch of cool parts on the ole k5 and change some things around. Wasn't really planning on doing this stuff now but might as well since I've got the whole month off lol
smokin.gif
Heres a list of what I plan to do to it this month.

-ARB air lockers front and rear
-513 gears front and rear
-crossover steering
-new beefy tie rod
-hydro assist
-new bearings, seals, brakes, and outers on front axle
-front leaf hangers
-52 front swap
-1350 front driveline
-holley efi
-rear disk conversion
-axle diff covers/pinion gaurds
-changing the ignition system
-winch bumper
-rock lights
-40s with beadlocks

Probably missing some details but Ill cover them as I go. Should be able to start on all this right after I get my CNC table finished up!
biggrin.gif
Here's a couple pics of the table I'm finishing up. Should help with making some armor for the k5! My holley efi kit also showed up.

In the mist of finishing up the cnc table I couldn't resist and I had to toss these on for a sneak peak! Definitely good motivation to get all my stuff put on it!
biggrin.gif

Going to start ripping her all apart on Monday for the new goodies to go on. We are heading over to the mooshiners swap meet in Puyallup, WA this weekend so I should be able to find the last few parts I need there. Anyone else going?

So I got the table done last weekend and was able to start tearing the k5 apart this week. Got both axles out and stripped down and halfway cleaned up. Took the gas tank out and got the return line bulk head fitting put in for the fuel injection and a fresh coat of paint!
biggrin.gif
Also got the leaf/body mount brackets removed from the front of the frame.

Got a little more done on the k5 today!
smokin.gif
Did a little painting since it was a nice sunny day out. Last week I came across everything for the newer quad headlight conversion and was able to pick it all up for $50!
grinpimp.gif
So I took the core support out today since its going away and it will make working on the engine wayyyy easier now lol.

Since I needed a spreader for the housing on the 60 and didn't want to buy one for $400 and up or borrow one every time I need one I decided to make one. Ended up using a couple pieces of scrap 1/2" plate, 1" tubing and some all thread for a total cost of $14.
biggrin.gif
I also made it so I can make different plates for different axles that bolt up to the main side pieces. Turned out perfect for what I need it for. Should be able to get the gears and lockers all done in the next couple days....hopefully.

Making slow progress but getting closer! Got the gears and locker all finished up in the 14 bolt as well as the disk brakeconversion and some longer wheel studs. Also went away with the crush sleeve in the 14 bolt for a solid spacer for a little more security. If only they stayed that shinny forever lol
shaking.gif
Also got my new leaf hanger brackets put in and the 52s set in there for mock up. Will have to wait and see where I sit for ride height with the new springs but I will definately be yarding out that flimsy stock shackle for a new beefier one that I can also make longer if the front sits low.
