Project (Not-So) Budget Buggy

Mike if you need any help on the caddy I'm close and have parts:wink1:

Happen to have a 425 oil pan and pickup? I need somethin' with a rear sump.

If your looking for extreme flex go with a rear sump not the 425 mid sump. That gives you 2 options buy one $$$$ or build your own. If your not in a big hurry I'm in the process of moving my tools to new place. The three things on my build list to sell are motormount frame crossmember, rear sump pans and pickups. But do to life interfereing it will be september or october before I can get going.

If the engine is a 500 not a 472 you will have to clearance the pan just above the rail for clearance on the con rod nuts or they go tick tick tick. The difference from the 425 pan to the standard front sump pan is only one bolt setback, the sump starts on the 5th bolt hole for the front sump and the 6th bolt for the 425 pan, counting back from the front of the engine.

Call if you need to........
What are you doing to the motor?
George

Motor is staying stock for now, I'm way over my head financially already and it's gonna get worse. It'll get built pretty wicked eventually, just not in the cards right now. I would have been fine if I'd stayed with the 350 but $200 for a Caddy 500 and TH400 was too good to pass up. :doah:

Also, I'm pretty sure there were two or three applications for full rear sumps, and one or two for 3/4 rear sumps. Although even used they go for quite a bit of money. Wouldn't happen to want to whip up a prototype for testing would ya? :D

Anyways, motor got pulled a few days ago, cab and body panels either got hauled away by the garbage truck or taken to the scrap yard. Just messing around with my welder by plugging some holes in the frame a welding things to my old winch mount now.

TH400 gets a rebuild and a shaft swap July 8th courtesy of Terry at Coonie's Racing Engines. After that I'll throw on the clocking ring and bolt the whole deal together, either make or have Kert at DIY4X make some motor mounts. I'm gonna stuff some new poly mounts in the factory clamshells and just adapt the mounts on the motor to them. T-case is getting clocked flat and then getting an FROR style mount cut for it courtesy of Kert at DIY4X.

Anyways, frame is currently sitting and getting stripped of bracketry, TBI 350 and 700R4 are for sale here: http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1598933#post1598933

It looks like we're about 30-45 days from move in, maybe. Then its build a jig to pressure test the pan and a jig for the pickup tube. The eldo pan is the only rear sump pan factory made afaik. Al at MTS has new stamped steel pans he had made but they are major$$$$ like about $475. I think is what he told me. The cast alum pans out there leak big time

George...I'm thinking we could work out a deal for a pan and pickup. I can get a factory rear sump pan for like $250 but if you've got something in the works I'll hold off for now. I'll probably end up making my own crossmember since I have no clue how it's all going to go together and won't until the motor is mounted and has a different pan on it.

As for updates...

MMMMMMM.....Cadillac :D

Tranny will be rebuilt in a week and a half. Rear main seal on the motor leaks like a warped screen door so I think I might be in for a rebuild if the condition of the seal is any indication. If that's the case, it'll to go Terry at Coonie's racing engines and BranndonC might have a burnout competitor. :p:

There's no way in hell this will be moving under it's own power by the end of summer so it looks like I'm gonna be doing a lot of ass kissing so that it can stay in the garage for the winter. Eh well, it's quickly snowballing into the mother of all builds anyways, might as well take my time.

Next items on the list are tranny rebuild and shaft swap, motor assessment, motor mounts, oil pan, motor crossmember, and FROR style t-case mount. I'll post more updates when the drivetrain is bolted into the frame.

If you want to reseal the motor I can help you do that. Would take about a day. Gasket set is about $80. If you rebuild it I can point out some cheaper upgrades to smoke Branndon's butt.

Stripped most of the crap off of the motor tonight. I didn't know so many asian beetles could curl up and die in one place. Carb was junk so my plan of getting it running on the carb first is completely out. Motor might need a rebuild, might not. I'm hoping Terry will have the time to pull the pan and one or both heads to give it a once over.

Headed down to Iowa next Saturday to get a bunch of stuff accomplished. Tranny is getting rebuilt, t-case mount is being cut and fitted, and the drivetrain will hopefully be mounted in the chassis by the end of the day.

George - I'll probably take you up on the offer. Although, after I get the drivetrain mounted my first priority is going to be getting the "cab" section bent up and tacked in place. After that comes the steering. Then hopefully I'll have the time to worry about the motor again. I didn't know you were into Caddy motors. Having both you, Kert, and Terry close by could definitely turn out to be one hell of an advantage.

Define into caddy motors....I only have 7 (complete) in my garage and oarts to rebuild 2 of them with a set of big valve heads

Latest update...

I got the wrong output shaft, went to bolt it all together and it was too long...IE the t-case was 2" from bolting up and there wasn't enough spline length to cut it off and re-try. Got a different output shaft that should be going in next week. I'm gonna box the frame and mount the drivetrain on Saturday, as well as (hopefully) make a winch mount and figure out where the radiator is going. After that I need to order a ****load of tube and get my bender working.

Front suspension is almost done and I'll be rolling with an 85+ degree approach angle. Might mess with the springs a little and get it to 90+.
th_yeah.gif
Major costs left are steering, rear suspension, fuel injection, and tubing. I think I'm just gonna run .120 wall HREW.

Pretty much finalized my plans for the rear suspension with a little help from a certain thread on a local board. Gonna be a 1/4 elliptical dual tri 4 link with MC's 1x1.25 heims all around. Probably use the 15" travel ES9000's I've got in the garage. Hell, I'll probably run them in both the front and rear. Trying to find prices on 2"-2.5" OD .5" wall tube. I hate the thought of bending a lower and I'm used to being able to drag leaf springs all over hell.

I'm hoping to make the shake down cruise next years 4th of July Crawl 4 The Cure.

For all those bored with words there should be plenty of pictures after Saturday.

Mixed day yesterday. The motor is in and mounted where we want it, most of the frame that I want boxed is boxed, but no other progress to speak of. By the time we got the motor in and sitting how we wanted it was 10:00 or so, still ungodly hot, and all of us had been up since 5-6.

Kert had to build a bumper today, so that was out, I have to go to Wisconsin next weekend, so it's gonna be another couple of weeks before any more progress is made. The rig has been stripped down, modified, and changed so much that at this point it would have been less work to start with a tube frame. :(

sounds like you and I are in the same boat.

cutting off all the old upgrades is a chore, and boxing is a pain in the but...

we need pics...however I have not been posting mine either:D

Got the buggy back here at 2:00 in the morning. Yesterday we made the winch mount, tranny mount, cut a few gussets, finished the shackles, cut a fuel pump block off plate, and a few other miscellaneous chores. My digi cam batteries are dead so I used our digital video camera, hence the pictures sucking. I took plenty of them to make up for the poor quality. :p:

Approach angle is going to work out nicely, but overall it isn't gonna come together like I'd hoped. Radiator might have to go in the rear or else just sit higher than I'd like. I'm looking into getting a custom one made as well. Also, unless I jack my seat up more than I'd like, I'm going to have to push the rear axle back to keep the bogger from peeling the skin off of my backside when the tire is stuffed. There's going to be a LOT of truck out in front of me so I wouldn't mind putting the seat a bit higher, but that forces me to raise the cage, which means it might not fit in the garage at ride height, which was one of my big goals for this project.

Overall, minor snags that'll eventually be worked around. I'm hoping to get the rockers done this week if I can get to the steel yard when it's open. Bender will get assembled tomorrow night and I'll work from there. The tubing might be DOM and might be HREW at this point, I don't know yet.

It's my mom's stang, she wanted a V6 and an auto so it's a rear wheel drive Taurus as far as I'm concerned. If you want more pictures I can grab 'em but the only thing special about it is the wheels.

ah that sucks man. Heck i bet ur Grand Prix could smoke it
