Project (Not-So) Budget Buggy

dumb question... I prolly missed a post in the thread about this... but how are you going to do your b-pillar x-bracing? I assume the design has changed from the original solid works model in that respect? Looks like the seats are sitting where the X will go... also, are the members of the x going to be bent somehow and if not, how do you plan on getting them in there? cut the tacks?

B-pillar x brace is undecided. I revised the seat mounts so that I sit farther forward. If I can keep it straight, I will, if not, it'll either be moved back or be bent.

If only the top two points sit behind the main hoop would you think that'd be detrimental to the strength? I could run gussets and stuff but I'm just too fuggin tall to make the seats sit completely forward of the hoop.

I don't think it will be a problem having part of the b-hoop bracing be slightly behind the plane of the hoop itself. Just make sure those nodes can't be pushed back. Lots 'o' gussets / tube. Maybe its the perspective in the photos, but your seat position seems like its pretty far back on your frame. My b-pillar is in a similar location (close to the spring hanger) and yet there is at least 6-8" between the back of the seat and where the x-bracing will go. That 6-8" is at head level... the base of the seat is even further away. Is your drivetrain moved back or anything? Engine looks like it might be sitting further back than stock...

man, I really need to start my own thread. lol! My digital cam going belly up has pretty much killed a full-photo-documented process plan. Oh well. I'll post some pics this weekend. What I have so far is stupid over-built. lol.

Judging by the former driveshaft the drivetrain is 6-7" rearward of where it used to be.

If the motor were in the factory location I could push the firewall forward that far, move the seats forward, and the x-brace wouldn't be a problem. However, the weight distribution would bring the suck and I would have less room to lean the radiator back.

I sat in it a few times and moved stuff and the back of the seat now only sticks behind the hoop by 2" or so. I might be able to get away with a slightly bent brace, time will tell.

I've been dying to see what you're building dude, definitely start a build thread.

yeah, christmas is a hella busy time for me and my wife at work... Ive been spent. Toss in helping my mom/dad with crap and fixing some stuff after the big wind storm and I ain't done crap lately. I am gonna work on the beast tomorow after work and 1 full day this weekend. Oughta be good. Does anyone else think that rockers need to be connected to the frame with 983572398723984724' worth of tube? I do. Frame flex? not for long.

Haha, I've got 4 slider supports on each side and the frame is boxed. The cage will tie into the frame in several more places and I have a couple of beefy crossmembers to make yet. ;)

yeah, I think I have 6 per side... and the supports dont just go straight up, they are all triangulated. Its definitely over kill, but thats ok. :)

Alright, lots of stuff has happened since the last update but not much actual progress has gone down.

Turns out the cheapo aluminum toolbox for a Toyota pickup from the local auto parts store fits the buggy absolutely perfectly. Gonna cut a foot more of the frame off than originally planned. Got most of the x-brace in. Picked up an 18 gallon aluminum fuel cell for $40 sight unseen. Has a Ford sender but it's not baffled and doesn't have foam or a sump so I might end up selling it. Links are now going to use a super secret prototype joint that I can't say any more about. Sticking with an open element air filter just for simplicity...I think that's all.

Sorry that I didn't get more done over x-mas break. I'm just not motivated to work on it when it's ****in freezing and gets dark at 5:00.

I'll get pics tonight of the toolbox and part of the x-brace that's done.

Made a little progress today. I'm not quite sold on the lower bars that come off the frame but a lot of tube went into them so I'm leaning towards keeping them. What do you guys think?
