Project Penny - All good things must come to an end

Wait, so how many trucks are you building?

Tahoe gets Duramax...

Dually gets Cummins and SAS?

Had a busy and productive afternoon today for sure!

Tore the 02 from running / driving condition down to pulling the cab off and setting it on the flat deck redneck style :D There were 2 skidsteers, a 3/4 ton truck and a quad involved :haha:

Tomorrow Andrew and I will pull the flat deck off with the cab still on it and will be loading up the rolling chassis on a trailer to be taken in for a final steam cleaning / rinse / degreasing before I pull the drivetrain off. With some luck, I'll be able to get the Duramax's new engine mounts made and set into the Tahoe by the end of the weekend. Then it will be fab time to reinforce the frame as much as we can up front to handle the extra torque and offroad twisting stresses it sees on a regular basis with a new engine crossmember and an improved front crossmember that ties the front spring hangers together.

Once the fab work is done, we'll paint everything up nice and set the engine in permanently. Then it will be my time to shine with new fuel lines and a custom wiring job :D

Ha ha, that looks funny, the engine is in the wrong end!

Good job man, nice progress.

Wow russ... Good job. I'm thinking about buying a utility john deere/kubota to do these type of things when I get my new house.

Andrew here, the other goofball in this mess... lol.

I doubt a small utility tractor would have the lifting capacity at reach to pull off these type of lifts, gotta watch that.

The 02' Dually is gonna get a solid axle, 4-5" of lift and the Cummins, which should be my DD and towrig for my 6.0L LQ4 powered Ranger... on 42's. Just so that mess is clear, lol.

Andrew and Russell, I would love to be there to help out, just for the fun of hanging out with you two again...Makes a chewed up axle bearing change seem like a cakewalk!
Awesome progress guys!

I saw this exact tractor lift a dodge neon on to my car hauler, for scrap.

oh and nice project you two have going on.

That's pretty amazing! Though, this truck did tip the scales at 8300 lbs though, bit heavier than your average neon, LOL!

Tonight I finished tearing the deck off the truck. Tomorrow we are gonna load it up and go hose it down / steam clean all the grease off it before I take the drivetrain off the rolling chassis and tuck it all aside until Andrew is ready to take delivery of it to start his SFA / Cummins swap. I don't suspect that'll be until after he gets his ranger up and running though.

On Friday, I'm gonna take a run up north to my place to check on things and attend a rally to try and convince the government to twin the highway up to where I live. Lots of nasty head on collisions on that highway way too often... Hopefully Saturday we might be able to get some engine mounts fabricated and get the Duramax mocked in. Once it is all fitted, I am going to replace all the soft hoses on it and do some final cleaning before it goes in. My goal is to have the engine and transmission permanently fitted by the end of next weekend. That'll leave me with a fuel supply line to run and wiring to do before it can be started. I also need to swap input shafts between the NP261 and NP241 and once the stuff from ORD arrives, I'd like to get my D60 re-assembled.

The ultimate goal is to have the thing running and driving by the 28th, when we have a car show that I registered my Tahoe into months ago. Even if I have to drag it out there on a trailer, it'll be in attendance.

The crazy thing is how much we already washed off before we started taking the truck apart! Andrew tells me he filled a 50 gallon drum full of mud in the wash bay at his work place... Simply nuts! Probably an extra 500 - 1000 lbs of just mud on the thing.

Russ I agree about the roadway, especially with it being a four lane at the end kind of dumb that its not in the middle. Can not imagine all the traffic that that road sees.

About time you signed up.:waytogo:

Looking forward to seeing the tow rig Andrew, lokking forward to the d :Dmax swap Russ, looking forward to swapping parts into Horton!:D

Some big visual progress today! Finally got the engine off the old rolling chassis and split from the transmission today. I went ahead and mocked it up in the engine bay to see how clearances etc look, and I must say I am dang impressed how well this engine fits in the Tahoe's engine compartment. Seriously believe that this particular engine was in fact designed to be installed in the 88-98 trucks...

Anyways, as you can see, the stock fan shroud will work very nicely with the engine where it needs to be placed. There are no clearance issues anywhere, and the exhaust dumps in a very convenient place. Infact, I would dare say that the engine fits better in the Tahoe's engine compartment than it did in the dually's. Changing injectors would most definitely have been easier as far as getting at the valve cover bolts etc goes.

In these pictures, the back of the engine is sitting a couple of inches higher than it should. I could either have it too low or a hair too high because of the jack stand I was using, and I couldn't be bothered to put a floor jack under it instead, LOL!

Anyways, I am hoping to get my engine mounts started tomorrow so I can get the engine, transmission and transfer case in permanently this coming week. I also need to drop the fuel tank and run a new 1/2" supply fuel line that the new engine requires. Before the engine goes in permanently, I will be painting the frame rails and hosing the engine down a bit better to get rid of the rest of the grease and the dust that couldn't be removed while it was sitting in the old frame. That should leave me with just doing up my wiring and fitting in my intercooler. The rest of the work is just bolting things back together after that.
