Project: SAS Tow Rig

One question, is it just me or our your springs really close together? Seams that my springs are closer to the ends of the axle tubes. Is this due to the bends in the front of the frame? Or am I just seeing things?

You made it look so easy. Wanna come do mine now? :D

I guess it's time to start hourding parts.

What years of Ford axles should I be looking for?

78-79 ford f250 is a d44 that would work or 78-79 ford 60... you can also use a chevy 60 but you have find a 90-91 passenger drop 241 out of a k5 or burban with vss to be compatible with your computer etc

Can they be done with minimal lift? I'd like to do a sas with ~2 in lift or so.

very nice. too bad they never came that way from the factory.

nojeepshere- you may run into clearance problems without much lift.

exactly! this is definitely how they should of came from the factory

agreed... i think youll prolly have to have atleast 3" of lift for clearance issues. the hangers im using give 3" by them selves, i did some pretty good cuttin on my front lca crossmember and my springs are still close to hittin it. id say you could prolly get away with running some stock 73-87 front leafs

Nice. I did the same for a Yukon, but I did it on a Yugo budget. I made all the parts myself and had the welding done by Pros. I missed your transfer case. Is it Auto Track push button or a 241 stick?

yea i did mine on a decently small budget myself... everything out the door once i get a new yoke put on my stock front shaft bought my tires and had them mounted and when i regear and put new wheel bearings in the d44 will come out to $2800

im running neither case... its actually a np243 which is a push button but its not autotrac gheyness... its basicly an electric 241

flex pix dood!!

werd... i needa get on dat

nah it must just be an optical illusion... its a 32.5" pad axle just like all chevy axles

How is your handling? I ended up building a track bar because I had a lot of side to side motion. Also, did you address the front pinion angle? My axle was a low pinion D44 with 60 outers (FREE D60 rear and D44 front from a friend's yard). I cut off the "C's" and angled the pinion up 15 degrees to make the front shaft work.

ehh handling right now leaves a little to be desired, im def gonna put a panhard bar and sway bar in this sucker, and later on i wanna get some softer springs... i have a hi pinion 44 so i dont realy have any pinion angle issue, and my caster is perfect, not a touch of death wobble :D

i really need to do some cosmetic grinding and painting :banghead:

fender measurements: 43.5" front 43" rear
fender to center of hub measurements: 27.75" front 27" rear... exactly 4.75" of lift front and rear over the stock #s of 23" front 22.25" rear

hows your motor doing with all those miles? you got something planned for it next?

Yo front shocks are on upside down SON :D

:p:

motor is doing just fine, ive got a little front main leak that is getting on my nerves but besides that its in good condition. hopefully in about a year i can tear into it and give it a freshing up and some goodies, i sure hope thorley tri-y headers are gonna work with my sas hangers

i think my current exhaust set up is restricting my motor i wanna go back and maybe get a mandrel bent 90 for one spot and get a true Ypipe

shoulda got pics with the whole frame down to bare metal... oh well

2 cans of rust tuff primer, 4 cans of rust tuff flat black and $40 bucks later here she is

you wouldnt have happened to make patterns of all those pieces did you?

the ORU are still $700, better than the $1200 or whatever they used to be.

And would a 2" lift spring be the shortest spring you could use without major clearance issues? Im thinking of abandoning my 79 and finally doing something with my 89 LD2500 Ive had since I was 16.
