Project "Scope Creep" 84 K5 Crawler

Lol. I haven't even started this project yet. But I'm thinking of chopping off the front clip, weld a tongue, gut the interior, and build a sleeping area in the cab and kitchen in the back just like any teardrop camper. As you can see, the body tub is still in good shape and should have plenty of room.

Basically, something like this...but a lot more-detailed.

This is still psyching me out. How stiff are these frames?!?

For reference, the front clip has been removed and be back had plenty of weight. Including:
  1. Unopened box of tall jack stands
  2. Shackle flip kit
  3. Old shackle hangers
  4. I'm still missing the back 2 body bolts; so most of the frame is unsupported by the gas tank

For weight reference

Dude, those cinderblocks are no bueno. Those will crumble on you with no warning. Get a piece of 4x4 from Home Despot and cut it into lengths of 18" or so and use that as cribbing.

It would probably not be an issue if the blocks were turned upright.

That said, there's a reason the front axle is still attached; I'm not comfortable using anything under a jackstand that's not floor (even cribbing, last resort). I just picked up some new, taller stands for the front. Just haven't changed them out yet.

Thanks for looking out. I appreciate it.

Great build thread, I love the way you restored the floor. You brought a K5 back to life. What tire size are you going to run with the 4.56 gears?

Ok, after a hiatus since June 2019, I'm back at it. Pulled the motor:

Sometimes things line up just enough to get everything cleared.

Above is the new-ish LQ4? I pulled it from a 1-ton passenger van, but forgot the year. I believe it's an 07.

Just checking in. I'm still alive. Spent a good chunk of 2020 remolding my house to sell it and moved in early 2021.

So...how do you move a blazer with only a rear axle, no front suspension, front clip, engine, etc?

You turn it into a trailer. I was able to weld together a tongue and bolted it to the B52 brackets.

Unfortunately, the new garage is quite small. Even though it's 3-car, it's only 19 feet deep with 7 foot doors, so this was a very tight squeeze.

I'm slowly getting back to work on the K5; won't give up.

I'm BACK! Ok, this build is taking way too long.

Few updates: I quit working on the Blazer in 2018/19 after my dog developed epilepsy. It can be easily fatal, so my focus turned to her care and ensuring things like loud noises didn't trigger a seizure. She's finally ballanced on the right meds, found the cause, and she's now stable. I moved (as seen above) and needed to get my shop organized (pictures below). I also got a new toy (pics below). This new toy actually lit a fire under my butt to finish the dang K5 project.

Got my shop all organized and built a 4x8 welding bench, ready to work.

This is the room I have in a 3-car garage. Being only 19 feet deep, I had to turn the Blazer sideways to have room for a workbench.

Installed high-clearance x-member and 4" lift springs with ORD HD shackles and DIY4X B52 front brackets

The new toy! Long story, but I was looking for a Mazda CX5 or Honda CRV as a better daily driver than my F150. Saw this at a Subaru dealer and laughed when I approached, knowing it was coming home with me. Now I've gone all-in; joined the Mile Hi Jeep Club, ran a ton of trails this year, joined a patrol, and volunteered to be the club's historian. Sadly, this gets better MPG on 38's than my F150 3.5L Ecoboost. And, it's a 6-speed manual! I've only ever wheeled my K10 with the SM465, so I have no clue how to wheel an auto.

I want the Blazer done by this summer so I can show the Jeep Club what an old-school full-size can do. I'm still die-hard square body. Maybe die-medium after a newfound love for Jeeps, but between my K5 and K10, I'm the Square Body Whisperer of my generation; I still don't know s--t about Jeeps.

Anyway, that's the update. Just ordered new seals for the 6..0, a replacement Painless harness for the K5, and a rear slider rebuild kit.

If it kills me, it will be done by summer.

Me too. Price out a stand-alone harness. Your time to prune that stock harness down is worth something too. Once you start factoring that cost in, the price of a stand-alone harness starts to become reasonable.

Agreed. Already got the Painless harness in my Summit shopping cart. I'm also ordering the Painless harness for the whole Blazer.
