Project Smoke Wagon

1984 GMC Jimmy 383 Stroker | SM466
Alright. It’s doing fine now. 200 degrees in traffic. Albeit it’s 40 degrees outside here. Everything is in working order and I’m loving driving my truck again.

Just took it about 35 miles in total. Still need some adjustment on the transmission. Idles great. This carb definitely doesn’t have the power of the OFT at WOT but it gets the job done and doesn’t flood my engine.

There must be a small vacuum leak somewhere. I replaced all the lines so not sure where it’s coming from. But it will idle up and down ever so slightly.

Today was the best day of my life so far. There is seriously something so satisfying in finally driving something you been working so hard on.

Got all the kinks worked out. Thing drives like a dream. Doesn’t overheat. And is quiet in the cab. Damn. It really was worth all the work in the end.

Now I have to save some more money up haha

Good to hear your getting all the gremlins worked out.

Good to hear your getting all the gremlins worked out.

After all the frustration.

All the cussing and throwing tools.

After all the leaks and dirt in my mouth.

I’m finally able to drive it. Man, I wish you could hear it start right up. Best sound on the planet. Little lumpy idle. Not super extreme but just the right amount. I’m forcing myself to sit on the couch. I want to be driving it. Wish it was summertime and I could fold the top up and hit a lake with the wife and dogs.

I think my plan was to have it driving mid November.

I only over shot my goal by 1 month. Not too bad.

My old man used to make bets who could get a car ready for a car show faster.

My dad pulled a 51 studebaker out of some briers and slapped a 350 and lokar in it and took it to a show in 3 weeks. Thing was just a body. Had it running driving stoping with gauges repainted and everything and pulled up to the car show to collect his bet money from the dude who sold it to him for $50 hahaha

He then sold it for 8k a couple months later.

I definitely know the feeling!

Summer it’s getting bed liner and roll cage.

Possibly Dakota digital dash.

Been throwing around the idea of a diy4x dash.

After driving it around for a little bit. I am missing the top end of the bigger carburetor. I’m hoping I can tune this 650 in and get a similar response as the QFT 750.

It doesn’t throw you back in the seat like it did before. Albeit not something I plan to do all the time. I would like to maybe do some sand/mud drags. Thinking I’ll keep and rebuild the QFT, use it for drags and keep the ASV2 for the drive home afterwards.

Something like that anyways.

I have had to richen the secondary jets on Edelbrock carbs, but at my elevation, I always have to lean the primaries too.
But I haven't looked into the factory jet sizes in the AVS series.

This weekend was such a blast finally getting to drive my truck around. Thing is amazing. Very satisfied with this so far. Still has an exhaust leak at the collector. I bought a gasket for it so hopefully that cures it.

I want to post up a video but I want it to sound perfect. Don’t want an exhaust leak in the video.

Ran over to a buddies house and put a timing light on it. I got it dead set at 34 degrees. Runs perfect. Going to be hard to get through another week of work before I get to really take it out again.

And just like that. As if it was clock work. Transmission no longer shifts out of first.

I have 1st and reverse and that’s it. Guessing the 2-4 band is the culprit. Really not looking forward to a transmission overhaul.

At first I thought it was just the TV cable sticking since I can’t seem to get it to snap back.

Just seems odd that it would be shifting fine for a whole day and then the next not shifting at all.
