Project Tetanus

89 K5 37s H1s 465 swap 241c sye Tub swap rust free
3 yrs I have been waiting for this! Paint came out 10x better than before. Will still need cut and polish to make really good. Put it all back together and took it out this weekend. (First time since I have owned it) Super stoked. Exhaust stops at mufflers so pretty loud. Brought the boat home to open up for the season and temp started climbing on trans when slow maneuvering. So ordered a derale cooler should be here in a couple of days. Tires are great no shake or shimmy so airsoft BBs work!

Awesome build, sure came a long way in short time! What did you use for undercoating and how did you apply it?

Did you end up getting the brakes worked out alright?

Blazer is looking awesome! I have a very similar setup on my 89 blazer as you and have been looking into using the super duty shaft as you did. I will most likely be ordering the SYE kit with the output flange from JB and was wondering if this combo worked without any additional mods (other than having it shortened)? Also thinking about getting the electronic sensor version as it's cheaper and I think would possibly work better with the future ls swap.

The only other modd I can think of is cutting off spring perches to roll diff up so it has no angle, I used ruff stuff perches. Actually I set about 1-2 degrees low so under load it runs around zero. They are longer and 3/8 material I think so super beefy and have 3 holes so can adjust where you axle sits. So no shims basically to get the right angle

So next project is swapping out the 700r4. It took a dump at the end of summer, I put a derale cooler on it in addition to the stock one, added a guage and all it did is let me know it was getting hot. Really couldnt do much about it. When pushing the boat around slowly, it heated up quick so something was slipping. Also on the highway it didnt like being in overdrive. So I had been looking for a manual trans and found one a couple of weeks before the auto became a boat anchor. So transfercase is out again to install a 32 spline input and pocket bearing. Dont forget to order the pocket bearing and dont bother with any of the auto part stores they cant find it. Go to a trans supply house and be done.
Anyway here is where I am at. I have always liked the 465 4 speed. I wanted a 4500 but they are so darned expensive and I have to redo my rear drive shaft again so was going to be a very expensive swap. You arent going to win any races with the 465 and the no overdrive kinda sucks but I didnt build this thing for its good mpg. The part I like is they are bullet proof and dirt cheap.
The other good thing about it is with this trans the 241 and 4.10 diff gears I am at about 72 to 1 final ratio. The rubicon jeeps are 73 to 1 out of the box. And you dont see K5 blazers on the trail or around town as much as the JKs. And as we all know blazers are way cooler.
Here are some before and after pics of the trans getting new seals and gaskets and cleaned up. Also pic of jig I made to pull the tcase out because I am not 20 something anymore. And swapping in the 32 spline input to match the new manual.

Cleaned up some cracked starter wiring, replaced rear main seal because it wont get any easier than with the transmission out. Bought and modified a transmission floorjack adapter that the reviews said "way too tall" it was perfect for me after a little tweaking. Got the trans back in after cutting a slot in the floor. Then used my tcase jack adapter that I built awhile ago
and put the tcase back in with a new 32 spline input to match trans and a new factory Morse chain and a new trans mount.

Got the top off the ceiling today. Havent touched it since tearing this thing apart 3yrs ago. I think the whole vehicle sat under a tree for a long time before I bought it because everything had this grime on it. Anyway did a quick temp paint job to make it somewhat presentable for the winter. Will do a permanent one in the spring and replace all seals since they are wasted.

Next on the list... I noticed the limited slip was acting up, as in locking and binding on turns and felt more like a locker than a gov lock. Was running straight 80-90 with no friction modifier, so maybe that was the problem. Anyway the boy has been wanting to learn to drive a manual transmission, and I wanted him to learn because in my opinion he should be able to before I turn him loose into the world. Weeellll, that may have been a bad idea because after him bucking a jumping it all over the parking lot learning, it made a big bang. Took it home and saw why no one likes the Gov-locks. Bummer. Took a couple weeks and found an open carrier with a detroit in it so here we go again.

Finally got the new carrier and detroit in. Definitely handles differently. Added more rear tire pressure and made sure they were equal pressures, seemed to help. Also assembled the tailgate and glass. Was an empty shell all summer, so all new seals and some other parts. Also had to clean all the grimy tree sap stuff off of glass and weird stickers. Worked great until wiper seals installed. Now really slow. Will disassemble to get dry spray lube on seals since they seal so tight I can't spray it on from the outside.

Havent updated in awhile. A few small things that make a big difference. Found a 2017 (I think) center console. My seats are 1999-2004ish (came with it so not sure). Everytbing I have found online says easy bolt in swap. Not for these seats. Took some fab work but much better.

Also picked up this old winch. Saw one probably 25yrs ago and thought it was really cool. Have never seen another one. Moving scrap pile around at a friends house a while back and flip over this aweful bumper in the dirt and found this.
