Pulling the Motor

Have you looked into going with a one piece rear main seal block?

Martin
I haven't because my block is relatively low miles and there's no pending issues with it. If I needed a block, yes, I'd definitely consider it.

Thats how i understood it. There wasn't any issues with your block in that area so why mess with it. I can certainly see doing so if you were going for a WHOLE new engine but just to replace a few components seems silly to scrap a good engine.

It's an upgrade, and makes it much cheaper and easier to swap to a roller cam.

I would do a complete rebuild if funds allow, you never know where cam lobe shavings are hiding in an oil galley or something

Well, I don't think the cam is as flat as I may have made it sound. I'll have to see when I get it out. There were only a couple rockers that had little movement while cranking, most of them still seemed to move normally. Should have the motor out Thursday.

What all are you removing to get the engine out? Hood only? I am considering this myself when I have the fenders and doors and hood off...I need to have the transmission rebuilt anyway...and it would allow me the space to paint the firewall...

I dont wanna speak for him, but thats the way "most" people do it. In reality, if your truck is a touch on the beater side and you dont mind a scratch or two, you dont even need to take the hood off. But, with the hood out of the way, its a pretty easy deal.

Depends onhow tall the truck is and how good your liftis.
Only last one we had to come thru the front and still barely cleared the crossmember

I say take the hood off, its 2 guys and a couple bolts, bing bang done and you dont have to worry about it.

I'm no expert but wouldn't it be worth pulling out a few of the pushrods from the suspected cylinders to make sure they're not bent?

Pulling the motor is a lot of work... Maybe there's a way to diagnose the failure BEFORE the motor comes out completely?

We tested everything else. Even if there's a slim chance it's not, I still want to do the roller cam and clean up the motor and the entire engine bay anyway while I'm at it. I was going to do it anyway next year, schedule has just been moved up :D. And with new cam I'll be getting new pushrods and springs so I should be good to go.

Pulled the motor this morning. Got a lot of cleaning to do. And yes, I removed the hood. Didn't even have to think about that one. Made everything tons easier, especially since it's just me working on it for now.

FYI,,I'm pretty sure that adding miracle grow to your oil won't produce a 1-ton diesel in your climate zone.;)
